I'm sure many folks with tractors might also have some machining capability.

otoh, the machining forums that do exist are not terribly busy with the exception of PM.

did you buy the rotab and tail-stock for a specific project? care to share?

I'd love to get my mitts on some machine tools, but lack the shop space and money

I'm trying to learn to think circular... :D
Got a dividing plate set with it, going to try a few practice runs this afternoon, no idea what specifically to make, maybe some spoked buggy wheels?

Looks like you are ready to start makin' chips! Having had access to a Bridgeport mill and a Southbend lathe in the past, I often find a need for one in the present. There's only so much one can do with a drill press.

Maybe a separate TBN forum for machining - similar to the one for welding - would kick start some discussions.

My son and I purchased a mill and lathe not long ago. The lathe hasn't arrived yet. He wants to get a rotary table and vice like you have in the photo. I've been reading the books and learning the calculations for cutting the metal types, cutter head speeds, tool design etc. The books are great but it really helps to have a machine to practice with. Great topic, thanks for bringing it up. What projects are you planning for the rotary table?

I'll second that. I purchased a small 3/4hp used milling machine a few years ago but use it mainly as a drill press. I have a very similar rotary table , which came with my mill but have yet to use it. Friends have been dropping off a number of end mills, measuring tools and other milling gadgets. It would be nice to follow a few projects here to learn more about machining.

What do you say, Muhammad?

A dedicated forum for machining would open up a whole new world of discussion, attract new members as well as possible new advertising/site sponsorship revenue possibilities ...

To steal an old ad pitch from Honda:
You meet the nicest people on TBN!

i remember this idea being hashed around a year or so ago here. i believe the general consensus was that the welding section was also for other types of fabrication and tools too. the general idea being that this is a tractor related site and not a dedicated fabrication site.

I have like zero exp. with making metal shavings, but I was under my truck this weekend and spotted a nasty groove in one of my brake rotors... it kind of made me smile..

About the only time I ever used my rotary table, I made a new torch mounting bracket for my machine plasma torch. I needed a radius slot, (you can barely see it in this picture). Wow I never dreamed machinist have to have such eye to hand coordination! :confused2:
