In Washington state No Trespassing really doesnt mean anything as trespassing itself doesnt either.

Oh gosh, where do you start to answer a question like that???
That sounds like some people in my area. They literally sing “this land is your land, this land is my land, from Kalifornia to the New York Islands“ while they build deer hunting tree stands in the trees, throw bottles on the ground, leave trash, even grow whacky weed! Then comes the dirt bikes, then ATVs, heck I’ve even seen kids build off road trails with jumps lol
Once they start cutting across your land, and nobody stops them, it’s over. It’s like the flood gates open to everyone.
I am paid by a company based 200 miles away that owns land to run off clowns that think it’s their ATV trail, bark park and deer hunting ground. I hate being ”that guy”, but I have had some interesting chest to chest shouting matches and have had some guns not pointed at me, but shown to me.
I have pulled down and sold quite a few portable tree stands after attempting to leave notes at base of tree to “cease & desist and remove hunting stand”

When someone like you does that, which sounds nice, they usually don’t realize the visual and sound disturbance they make for the owner. I remember my old man liked to bird or nature watch off our deck and then some clown comes through and all the wildlife gets scared off.
Plus it just stresses out the landowner to see their property is not secure from strangers. Reduces their quality of life and privacy.

What if you are trespassing With your dog through even vacant land and the owner is on his vacation hunting deer from a tree stand and you ruin his hunting vacation day by scaring off all the deer?

Because spanking them doesn't change the cause of the behavior. It might put a quick stop to the immediate misbehavior, but it doesn't resolve it in the long run.

Think about it. Smart kids get whacked once and learn to never get caught again. Not so smart kids get whacked a lot. We all knew "that kid" in grade school. Little Johnny. (there's a bunch of jokes about that kid, google them). The teacher was constantly paddling that kid. Did it ever resolve anything? Apparently not, because he's getting whacked again and again.

I guess you can say the same about adults and jail.

Only the death penalty permanently resolved the problem.

There are problems that need to be permanently resolved in this world.

There is a difference. Same as if I enter your house snd watch TV or enter your house snd break the TV.

But, I bought the land, I pay taxes on the land - you did not.

So, you stay off. It’s not yours.

I did not know about Maine's implied permission about private property, which is quite unique. Interesting.

But -- although Maine's laws are an oddity, for the vast majority of readers of the forum-- everything I posted is relevant and true.

What I don't understand is this: If you believe it is OK to trespass the neighbor's property at will, why did you seek to justify it by citing how little the property is used?

I was spanked and I spanked my kids but I decided it was wrong to spank kids while the law forebid whipping adults for misbehavior.

I spanked my boys perhaps a couple of times. Generally one swat, always with an open hand.

When they got older, realized that there were other punishments that hurt more than a swat.

That said, some kids can be like wild little indians.

There's a 50 acre lot abutting mine which has been visited once by the owners in the 20 years I've lived here. My neighbors have been here for 30 years and never seen them. What does it hurt for me to take a walk through it with my dog?

If the land has a fence around it, you stay out.

If the land isn't fenced with no "no tresspassing" signs set out all over the place, I'd see no reason why you couldn't hike through the area.

If I owned 50 acres somewhere and didn't get there much, I'd make certain to be very neighborly to look out after the place when I'm not there.

1st grade was the 1st time I ever feared an adult. Nun hit me in the head with a broken pointer stick. Left a welt. I had to get my parents involved. That stopped it for me, but others still got beat on a regular basis. The beatings didn't stop the behavior.
