Do you know what the purple paint law is?

First became aware of the purple paint law perusing hunting forums where it and trespassing issues generally were discussed endlessly. Never seen them in the wild in our slice of heaven where the yellow posted sign holds sway and likely won’t bother and stay w/ signs. on our south side the neighboring tract was owned by the state and harvested every few decades and noticed the border trees all have big red spots indicating the property line, at least until it goes over a stream. Timber cruisers I know use blue hashes that I understand meant 3 for ok to harvest, 2 to indicate ok to take trees, but no machinery and 1 indicates no go (wetland or property line). On our place we are adjacent on the east and south sides to large tracks of undeveloped, heavily forested land where it is easy to get lost. I remember a friend & I got turned around looking for our NE corner marker (galvanized pipe) and got completely lost and ended up on an abandoned town road way off our place. We started posting our place years ago due to nearby neighbors started dumping junk (washer & carpeting) so the yellow signs went up every 660 feet. Thinking of creating a stencil to spraypaint my own signs on old junk boards instead of buying the plastic/Kevlar/metal ones.

In NY State they have a General Obligations Law (quoted below) that protects landowners somewhat.

Money and Liability

Whether the property is posted or not, the General Obligations Law may protect landowners from liability for non-paying recreationalists on their property. This law was enacted to protect private landowners from liability resulting from legal actions filed by those who recreate on their lands. Recreational activities covered include: hunting; fishing; organized gleaning (picking); canoeing; boating; trapping; hiking; cross-country skiing; tobogganing; sledding; speleological (caving) activities; horseback riding; bicycle riding; hang gliding; motorized vehicle operation for recreation; snowmobiling; non-commercial wood cutting or gathering; and dog training. This protection does not apply in cases of willful or malicious failure to guard or warn against dangers.

Landowners may charge for hunting, trapping, or fishing access; however, this practice removes the liability protection granted by the General Obligations Law. To learn more about landowner liability see Cornell University's publication "Recreational Access and Owner Liability" (leaves DEC website).

I asked my siblings a few years ago if we ever got spanked. I honestly don't remember, and they couldn't either. We did know that the threat was there though... as somebody else said, the embarassment alone is a deterrent.
I just remember Mr Brill's paddle and the anticipation of getting that swat. Got it only one time, but I remember it.

Also remember my uncle kicking me in the butt so hard I went crying to my dad. We were at the gun club and they had me out with the shotgun for the first time. I accidently swiped the barrel across my uncle after I shot it (believe it was a single shot and I had shot it so even though I knew the rule, I knew the gun wasn't "loaded"). Still remeber crying to my dad (who was there) and the only thing he said was it was a good thing I didn't do it to him because he would of kicked me harder. Talk about compassion. Thing is, to this day, I still remember that lesson due to that kick.

My parents found fireworks under my bed one time as a kid. Got a spanking then. Sure there were more, but that's the only one I remember because I'll never forget my dad telling me "there are two ways this is going down, you stand there and take it like a man, or you can run around with a chicken like his head cutt off, but either way, you're going to get it"🤣

Ironically enough, my dad lives with me now due to his age and I love him dearly, even though he may of spanked me a couple of times.

Death penalty has proven ineffective as well.

For murders by someone else - maybe.

For repeat murders by the same person - I’d argue it’s 100% effective.

Death penalty seems less effective than it could be because of the non-stop appeals and stays of execution for decades.
If we have DNA and/or video evidence, it should be done faster and be more public if it’s a completely solid case.
Executions were very public 100+ years ago. That in itself was a deterrent. I’m not condoning public executions, but some kind of notice given that someone was executed for murder might stop another from committing a similar atrocity

North Carolina, done WRONG!
that tree is very close to the property line. when walking the trails to lay out the prescribed burn i asked the forestry guy why this large oak was still there, how did it survive the many clear cuts over the years.

my land is 100% pine with a jungle of weedy trees of various species, mostly oaks. all small.

he said that tree is what's called an edge tree. because surveying back in the day was pretty sketchy, no one was really sure who owned the tree so no one took it.

now, because no one was sure, they might say first come first serve and deal with it later, in court.

Can't help but think your statement is 100% wrong.

Back in those days with no TV and nothing else to do but work and church, a good hanging was nothing more than entertainment. Why on God's earth would anyone WANT to attend a public execution?

I don’t know about that…..
True, you or I might not want to attend it. But the very fact that one occurs might be gruesome enough to prevent another murder and that in the end is the goal- reduce future murder
