Hey Dave,

Try putting on a football or motorcycle helmet, and wearing it on your tractor, when it is 90 degrees outside. Your head gets hot and hotter and your thinking becomes impaired as well, proportionately, to how hot your head is getting. Helmets also restrict your vision, that also promotes haveing an accident.

Helmets have their good points and they also have their bad points. Wear them if you want to.. Period

Same with seatbelts. They have their good points and they also have their bad points. Such as not being able to get unbuckled from your vehicle in time, after an accident, from fire, water, or debris. also having a seatbelt on, can cause you to actually get crushed, from not allowing you to have any movement in a crash.

Seatbelts, can also save your life, but not always.

The helmet does protect your head much more from head impact, but the helmet can and does actually cause the accident to begin with, sometimes. The head is a very important part of the body, but if the head is left and the rest of the body is torn up, that's something to think about as well.

Do I wear a helmet, yes, but not because of head impact with the ground, but rather because it is the law and the helmet protects my head and facial area from air, rain , and flying insects and debris.

I went through my first 2 motorsickles without a helmet. On my 3rd, I started wearing a helmet because it was the law.

Have you ever wondered, why, so many motorsickle riders wear just the little bitty helmets, that provide little to no protection? It's because the the 1/4 or 1/2 helmets are so much more cooler to the head , they have better visibility, and to satisfy the law.

Do I agree that all motorsickle riders should wear a helmet? Absolutely not. Wear one if you want to, but if you do, don't go around telling everybody else that they should or else.

I do agree that all children however, should wear a helmet and seatbelt, as they do not have enough common sense, to drive safely and defensively.

Same with seatbelts. If you want to wear them and they give you the warm fuzzy feeling that you desire, that's wonderful, but if you do wear a seatbelt, don't go around, telling everybody else that they should do the same as you do, because they are going to become squashed to death or worse.

As soon as they come out with seatbelts for motorsickes, I will feel so much more safer. That way, I will know for sure that I won't get thrown from the Motorsickle. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Get your tractors running &
Have a nice day,

If I'm on uneven ground I'll wear it, if I'm out on the flat I won't. I find it somewhat confining, just a preference thing I guess. The helmet thing on motorcycles always confused me. Why give the cyclist the option to go without one and mandate a seatbelt in a car? How many fatalaties could be avoided by mandating a helmet in a car? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

If you were to wear a helmet while taking the peripheral vision test for your license, you would fail. Also, while the helmet might protect your head in an accident, the extra weight can cause serious neck injuries.

I very rarely rode without a helmet, but I don't support mandatory laws. I've worn my seat belt religously for the last 25 years, but don't support the laws requiring them. (I also hate cigarettes, but don't support current Maine law which prohibits a store or bar owner from catering to smokers if he wants to.)

Getting back to the original question; I don't wear mine; but since I started reading posts here in the last few months, that'll probably change.

I only wear mine cause it keeps my back side from sliding around so much causing a sore rear, in 90-100deg heat everything sweats /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Still waiting for my Kama to arrive, but I will wear my seatbelt. I was reading a fatality report last week about an older driver mowing his field (in New York State, I think) who passed out, fell out of his tractor, didn't get hit by the wheel, but got caught by the bushhog and dragged a hundred feet. Neighbor thought it was odd the tractor was bumped up against something and still running, went over to investigate, and has to call 911. You just never know. Like insurance, it's cheaper not to buy it, until that time you need it!

Yes, I wear my seat belt whenever I start my Boomer as I learned everything about the tractors from this forum. .
I use a four step system....
1). Sit in the seat.
2). Put on helmet with ear plugs.
3). Put on seat belt.
4). Turn the start key.

A great thread that has set me to thinking. I recently purchased a tractor and have not been using the seatbelt at all. I'I condider myself fairly safety conscious, have purchased a tilt meter, always have the rops up, and rarely cut or use the FEL work outside of 1st gear. My rationale has been, right or wrong, that the seat belt is for those who either need to or do work the tractor fast, and I operate mine slowly with the perception that with tractors (even more so than cars) speed kills. As 1bush2hog mentioned, I have more fear of being pinned against a tree, or being upside down in a creek bottom with my belt on than my own ability to bail out safely at 3-5 mph if the thing starts to roll.

So, you guys have convinced me to start wearing the belt on flat ground. What about when cutting wooded trails or rough areas- strap in, or prepare to bail out if needed?

I would if my BX22 had it where it should be; instead it is under the panel when they replaced the leaking fuel sensor.
