Funny you mention the stand alone dealerships. We just got one here and they closed the Nissan franchise at the GMC dealer. I talked to the owner. He is a 3rd generation dealership owner. His dad and grandfather owned Ford Dealerships up around Ft. Wayne Indiana.

I would strongly recomend the Tundra, unless you constantly tow heavy trailers, in which case you should be looking at a diesel;but you already know that. I would match the 5.7L, 6speed Tundra against any 1/2 ton truck out there in towing and fuel milage(empty or towing). I routinely average 18 MPG empty running the back roads around here and better than 19 empty on the interstate at 70+ MPH. Towing an 8,000+ load I average 12 to 12.5 MPG; the reason I traded my '05 150 SuperCrew

well ya got my 07 gmc crew 4x4 vmax beat in fuel econ but id be more than happy to hook em up hitch to hitch and see who drags who across the parking lot, then we could set em up at the strip and see who gets the best time and after that we can drop drop 10k load on the ball and see who gets there first. ALL the toy air haulers talk big but ive only had one hook up with me and even with 33" tires on mine he didnt have anything for the mighty gmc v-max. truck and a half distance ahead in less than 3 blocks but he was tryin real hard, didnt want any more at the next light. lol :D
little red hasnt been beat by a toy yet.

I have not had the opportunity to drive a GMC V Max or the new Tundra but back in early 2005 I sold a boat to a guy in Washington DC. He had never towed anything and showed up in a new Titan 4x4. The boat was 30' and about 10K-11K. He had me drive it the 45 miles or so to the lake so he could watch how I planed the stops and made the turns. His brother followed us in my Hemi 2500 so I could go home and they could head out after the lake trial.

I have to say I was impressed. It would out tow, out accelerate, and out stop my Hemi 2500. I was already not pleased with my Hemi but the Titan was one **** of a truck. I know the other manufactures have came along way in the last 4 years or so but at that time the Titan was kind of the 1/2 tons hand down and had the 3/4 ton gassers beat also.

Reckon why you don't see many Dodge roll-backs and wreckers. Why can't they build a body and electrical system to match that darn Diesel engine. Still using a 1992 Dodge 3500 with Banks turbo 4 wheel drive super cab, it got better mileage than any 7.3 or gas truck that we had around. BUT---But it is the roughest riding rig around and the wiring and body are falling apart but the engine is just getting broke in. But what can you expect from a 16 year old farm use truck that has done it all. Government emission control are killing the new diesel engines both in trucks and tractors!!!!!Ain't these things 'pose to last at least 50 years like my 8N?????? Heard Nissan was going to use the Navistar diesel and build their own 3/4 and 1 tons in Michigan. They are still owned by Renault???? Is any of this true??? I see they are building alot of New "stand alone" Nissan dealership buildings in Louisiana and TEXAS. Lots of heavy pickup trucks sold in that area.
You can't compare a 92's ride with a 2nd or 3rd gen. That 92 has leaf spring front suspension, the others coils.

And now Dodge finally got with it and makes trues cab and chassis models, and 4500 and 5500 trucks. We sell mainly trucks and we have sold aquite a few for rollbacks now, and in fact, have one for the dealership now.

Late to the game, I know, but maybe they are catching the rest of the truck up with the best diesel engine out there finally.

What the heck are we going to do with these new emmissions controls standards that are killing fuel mileage and engines by the barrel full. Do You think they will build a glide kit like the big rigs do that I can have my cake and eat it too!!! A new truck with a good ride with great fuel mileage and power!!!!

That's exactly the way I see it, too.

All the Titans or Tundras I see rarely have a 1,000lb plow hanging off the front or a scoop full of rocks in the back. They're almost always empty with some white collar clown driving it to work as a commuter car.

No wonder they "last soooo long"

People just get all gushy over Toyota quality. Wonder how they'd fare gettin the snot beat out of 'em in an oil field or a construction site.

I agree.

another thing to think about with all the new toys out there is ya they are rated to pull heavy loads now, but this is all new to the rice market in a 1/2 ton truck. How well will they pull with 150k miles on them? I remember the little datsun/nissan truck with 300k miles on them back in the 80's. beat to heck and still running but they had anything hooked to their balls on a everyday basis that was in excess of 5000 lbs.

This competion is the greatest thing for the 1/2 ton truck market, the price of fuel is driving the market to do something about the mpg problem. I read a report that was talking about the toyundra and how it used a 4:30 rear gear to pull that 10k load, imagine what it could do with 3:43 when it comes to mpg. gm will have the 6 speed in the 1/2 ton market in 09 in something besides a deanli which will push the mpg way up.

good luck to you all

Here's something else GM is doing to push the fuel mileage way up ;)

from what i have read that is the 5.9 which will have the same demensions as the the 4.8 and 5.3. which means its possible to have something like a diesel impala or g8 or trail blazer or anything else a 5.3 gas engine will fit into.
