Just about all my tools have names. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Oh, the bandsaw or an occasional drill might go through the harv experience without a name but generally, tools get named.
Awhile back Caterpillar Skid Steer paid a bunch of us small business owners two hundred dollars cash each for two hours of our time. They have a new advertising program and they wanted to see if it tickled our fancy.
In the heat of discussion I referred to my skid steer by her name. Her name is Iris. I bought her in the spring a couple of years ago and well uh the irises were in bloom. Some of them were yellow, she's yellow, and heck I loved my grandmas. One of them was named Iris.
One of the bean counter type small business owners came unglued. He laughed out loud and made some questioning statement about my tractor having a name like that was unusual.
I instantly countered back with my best incredulous look, "you don't?" Of course someone who buys Thomas skid steers because he can buy them new at auctions for half the price of a Bobcat I'm sure shops for shop tools at Harbor Freight.
I figure it this way. We like to talk about things we care about. When we do we give that item a name to individualize it from the others like it and in doing so we do the same to ourselves.
I like my tractor. She is an extension of me. Like me she's a squatty body. And like me she also surprises people who only judge on appearances.
So yeah, Iris is her name. And if you were to meet us in real life in no time at all you'd come to think she is a living entity with feelings and emotions. Especially if you listen to me anytime at all. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
