And once the filter is off, don't forget to check that the gasket did not stay stuck to the engine. Bad things happen if you put the new filter on with the old gasket still stuck on there. Did that about thirty years ago on a new Bronco. Knew it didn't feel right when I put it on. About a mile down the road it blew. Black smoke in the rear view mirror looked like a blown NASCAR engine. Stopped immediately and figured it out right away, and just required a walk home for oil. I still think about that every time I screw on a new filter to truck, tractor, or car.

Did the same on a 92 Suzuki Sidekick, realize it when oil was leaking on my garage floor when I back it out, luckily no damage done.
I have change hundreds of filters since, but been watching very carefully for that gasket.

"And once the filter is off, don't forget to check that the gasket did not stay stuck to the engine. Bad things happen..." Well I guess I'm glad to see I'm not the only putz that did this one. Did it once when working in an auto shop. Fired the car up while still on the lift and left a puddle, a pretty big one. Needless to say hasn't happened since. But I have also all to often come across He-Man's filter. Strap wrench Channel locks or stab the sucker with a screwdriver like everyone else says. Even had a few I had to improvise to get off. :D
