Kubota
I have a newly aquired tiller. The tiller's shaft wont go on the B7100's PTO shaft. The lands look unfinished to me. Slides right onto other tractor shafts - but not mine. Anybody heard of kubotas with unfinished pto shafts? Here's a pic. Does it look finished?

That B7100 is close to 20 years old. I expect you've got some rust to clean up off the tractor's PTO shaft. Probably some burrs, nick and other minor damage too.

Have you ever had any PTO driveshaft connected to that B7100, or is the tractor new to you?

Nah - its clean. After many attempts to feed the shaft on...and WD40...and wire tooth brush, and clean rag...it wont even start onto the shaft. I give...?

Did you just buy the tractor?

I bought it new about 20 years ago. I've only had a belly mower on the mid...nothing ever on the rear PTO. Just blades and trailers etc. on the 3 pt. hitch.

Not sure I get your question. I took the tiller's shaft into the Kubota dealer, the mechanic slid it up onto another cat 1 tractor, like a dream. On The good tractor shaft, the lands looked chamfered and the female slid on for about a half inch before the collar had to be slid to allow full-on connect. No problem. He says all PTO shafts are the same. Guess I'll have to trailer it in.

Same Shaft?

Well, he's right...shame you didn't notice this when you bought the tractor.
Let us know what the dealer determines...

In the far dark caverns of my memory storage I seem to recall different splines for Japanes home designated Kubotas as having different splines and maybe even different rotation???:(

Good point, Egon...the OP may have a grey market machine.

To me it looks like there are small splines between the larger ones? Or is that an illusion?

To DT86 - I don't know, but I will look hard for burs or whatever before I go hauling it back to the dealership.

Try a wire wheel on a cordless drill if there is any crud/rust on it. Then try to hook the shaft to the tractor with out the other end connected to the implement.

Are you sure you had everything lined up properly? As in, the splines on both shafts and everything inline with each other. Is the shaft sliding in and out as it should?

I have cleaned it up with a wire brush (handheld). The female wont even start onto the male tractor shaft - at all. The female shaft for the tiller is operating fine - tested at the dealer today.

Do you think your machine is grey market?

Well your shaft out of the tractor doesn't look like pto shafts ive seen before. Should just be straight channel from the front to the back. It almost appears to be some kind of upside down v in the low spots on the shaft. If that is true I don't think your shaft is going to line up.

I dont think so - but not sure - just because I have no idea what "grey" market is. Bought it from a dealer in Pontiac Michigan close to 20 years ago.

Grey market machines are designed for use over seas and have found their way to the States. They lack safety standards required in the US and are also different in other ways, the odd size reverse rotation pto mentioned earlier, stickers in Japanese, ect.

Spline looks different.
If it's only those small splines and all else is the same, just grind them off. I have done it with a hand held grider and all worked fine.
Accurately measure first.

When you engage the PTO which way does it turn? Grinding may be a waste of time if it's reverse rotation.
