I recently sold my sons BX2230 on e-bay out of necessity. I had never sold anything there before and I was apprehensive to say the least. The buyer had never bought anything on e-bay before so he was also very apprehensive. I stated everything up front and had good pictures. He lived 5- hours away so he did not see the tractor before he bid. We both made some mistakes before it was all over but he got a nice tractor with 85 hours for a good price. I will say PayPal is probably a safe way to sell and buy but on a large item it is expensive for the seller. My intension was to accept down payment only from PayPal but the buyer sent the entire amount by PayPal by mistake. So after a phone call from him I refunded the entire amount and he just paid me in full at the time of pickup. All's well, but a crook may have seen an opportunity. One thing I was not sure how to handle was e-mails from people wanting to know what was my reserve price, so I didn't tell anyone thinking it would not be fair to those that had made a bid.

You bring up a good point about PayPal and large amounts, the sell can get wacked. I talked with a couple people selling on Ebay (tractors) and on a large purchase some will not give as down payment but drive right out to see the tractor. If they don't like it they walk and risk bad FB but at least they are not out the money. In thise case maybe the tractor wasn't what they wanted, described shape not correct, etc. And one guy I talked to said if I drove up and didn't like it he would drop the deal without questions. Personally I only bid on something I'm really interest in.

I bought my NH TC40DA from Tarheel Tractor in NC off eBay. However, I did thoroughly research Tarheel first. I checked the BBB, and I used Google to search for positive/negative comments. I called Tarheel and spoke with the sales team and the parts/service team.

I gave my local dealer multiple chances to match Tarheel's price, but they couldn't get within a few thousand dollars. Add local sales tax on top of the difference and I saved a bundle which paid for numerous implements.

I have no affiliation with Tarheel... just reporting my experience.

I also bought a new Jinma chipper and back hoe thumb off eBay.

I sold my JD last winter on ebay, encountered no problems. Got what I was asking and the buyer bought a good tractor. No money exchanged hands until he saw the tractor and was completely satisfied with it.
Normally you don't have to be a brain surgeon to recognize the "phonies" on ebay.

I like to look on Ebay for things I'm interested in and to just browse local listings in the Agricultural and Industrial sections. I've found a few great deals this way, but doing a search for a keyword also has worked well for me. Especially if an item is listed in an area that's not a normal place to find it. That's how I found my laser level.

Last week I searched for Seine nets to catch fish in my small pond and move them to my big pond. $32 on ebay with $8 shipping. I did a google search for seine nets and found the same thing online for under $20 including shipping.

It's very rare that I can find a deal on Ebay that I can't find cheaper at another store.

I never buy from people with no feedback, or very few. If it's enough money that it will hurt me if I lose it, then I either pick it up and pay for it then, or pass on it.
