The buyer had never bought anything on e-bay before so he was also very apprehensive. I stated everything up front and had good pictures. He lived 5- hours away so he did not see the tractor before he bid. We both made some mistakes before it was all over but he got a nice tractor with 85 hours for a good price. I will say PayPal is probably a safe way to sell and buy but on a large item it is expensive for the seller. My intension was to accept down payment only from PayPal but the buyer sent the entire amount by PayPal by mistake. So after a phone call from him I refunded the entire amount and he just paid me in full at the time of pickup. All's well, but a crook may have seen an opportunity. One thing I was not sure how to handle was e-mails from people wanting to know what was my reserve price, so I didn't tell anyone thinking it would not be fair to those that had made a bid.
You bring up a good point about PayPal and large amounts, the sell can get wacked. I talked with a couple people selling on Ebay (tractors) and on a large purchase some will not give as down payment but drive right out to see the tractor. If they don't like it they walk and risk bad FB but at least they are not out the money. In thise case maybe the tractor wasn't what they wanted, described shape not correct, etc. And one guy I talked to said if I drove up and didn't like it he would drop the deal without questions. Personally I only bid on something I'm really interest in.
