Trench - big enough to fit the tile in is all you need.
Here in farm country 4 inch is the smallest tile generally used. Five or 6 inch is common if a bigger area, and up to 12 or 15 inch main lines to collect from several other lines. Without knowing how much water you are collecting, don't know, but if this is a small install 4 inch? I think they make 2 inch for homeowner use, but the water has a hard time finiding sich asmall bit of pipe....
