Ok, some of you know my last go-round with the dump trailer idea.
Had a brain fart yesterday afternoon and called a budy up north that owns a campground. He always has one or two old trailers that people give up on. He said "sure, I got a couple", so off I went this morning. Ended up with a 30' tandem frame not including the tongue for 300 buckeroo's.
The ride home (1 1/2 hrs) was brutal, the thing shook me nearly to death!
The first thing I did when I got home was to measure out what I wanted to keep, got the jackstands and cordless sawsall out and went to town! The frame is 2" x 5" x 1/8" box tube. Axles both have brakes. I have no clue what the axles are rated for but there is an aluminum tag I am going to try and decode. I'm guessing they are 3500# axles.
One thing I have noticed on storebought trailers is their welds don't seem to look worth a darn. I have a carry-on (tractor supply) and the welds on that just plain suck!
So now I have a good start on it, maybe if I can sneak (wife hates me spending money) some steel home tomorrow I can start the dump box.
OK, long winded so on with some pics.
what I started with

this is exactly how it was stock, I will add an inner gusset once I figure out where the cylender will go.

outer gusset/brace just to satisfy me, there were none on it stock.

I just realized that in the 7th pic you can't see the rest of the piece, it's 4" x 1/4" plate that i bent on my homemade press brake.

Nice!

For me, I would have kept it at 30'. That would have made a nice dump

To heck with the dump, I want to see that homemade press brake!!!!! That is a project of mine that has been on the back burner for about 25 years!!!!!! mostly because I work in sheet metal and if I need something bent I take it to work and bend it! :D
Nice start to you dump though. I built a 6.5' x 16' tandem trailer a few years ago from an 18' camper. I paid $75 for the camper and stripped it down and got $110 out of the scrap steel and aluminum! Keep the pics comming! Is this to be towed on the road or strictly an off road dump?

Probably be over 10k though...

Have you guys ever had one inspected/certified for over 3,000lbs ?(a trailer)

I had a home made car trailer, and it seemed light a nightmare to try and get it registered for over 3,000 lbs so I sold it. Needed like proof of axle capacities, proper shackles/springs, brakes, tongue with weight distribution proper.

10" drums so I will assume they are 3500# axles. I don't plan on loading it all that heavy, mostly for roof tear offs and construction debris, a little firewood now and then. Gravel and such I will leave to the dumptrucks.

I had built an ATV trailer a few years back from an old popup camper frame (my brother backed over it with his big excavator...LOL) anyway, I had no trouble getting it registered as homemade, just had to weigh it and take the weigh slip and size to DMV, was a piece of cake here in NY.
I also registered a few in VT as homemade (when I lived there) and never had any problems.

I picked up some 3" x 1 3/8" C-channel today, three 20' sticks. Nice to have some new material to work with for a change! LOL
I don't want to start the dump frame unitl I know where the piston is going to be mounted (it will be easier to have that end in before the dump bed as I have no way to lift it once I build it in place).
I could always get my neighbor with his tractor and fel to lend me a hand, he restores old trucks and gas pumps.

I have a question, lol, what are your thoughts on putting some sort of spacers between the frame and dump bed frame? I was thinking maybe some UHMW or even lexan. Or should I just let the dump bed frame sit right on the frame?
I'm making progress, I will take some more pics once I clean up the garage a little...lol

IT LIVES!!
I picked up a 4" x 24" x 2" cylinder yesterday afternoon and went to work this morning on fitting up the rest of the subframe so I could get the cyl. in. I took the poweerpack motor apart and re-installed the brushes and hitched it all up and low and behold it lifts! I had to do some experimenting with the solonoids to get it to come down though...lol.

I like your new trailer. Glad you got it dumping.

Sorry I couldn't resist mentioning this due the picture below.

Stopped at a stoplight and pulls up next to davedj1. Sir? (Scratches head) You seemed to have lost part of your trailer back there. :confused2:

It must have broke in half.

I shot some paint on the frame today, I will try and get some pics of the trailer and the brake tomorrow.

I buy and sell old camper frames, Next time just take off the front 2 tires and it will eliminate most of the bounce on the road. The frame is too lightweight for the tandam so once it starts hopping it doesn't quit.

Here is the finished project. I will have to take some better pics when it's not raining. I will take some pics of my brake once I clean out the shop, after this it is quite a mess...lol.

Very nice looking trailer Dave!!! That pic from the rear looks like it is twisted!! I hope that is an optical illuission, that would be a shame to have put in all that work and then have it twist on ya!!

Thanks, it was a lot of work but worth it.
NO twist! LOL It's just the angle I took the pic.
I built it all in the shop on a level concrete floor. I will try to get some better pics. I have to take it and get it weighed so I can register it.
