Dump Trailer - Rock Question

   / Dump Trailer - Rock Question #11
Another good idea is to split a piece of pipe and fit over the cutting edge of the bucket. That way, it'll slide on the driveway and allow the stone to roll over into the bucket. I did this for a neighbor with a paved driveway. Didn't scape up the driveway with the bucket.

How wide is your trailer. My one-ton is 7' wide and my buckets 5' and 6' wide. I load the buck in the truck. When the pile gets to far forward to reach I close the tailgate and raise the bed go get the material back to the rear then go at it with the bucket some more. This is my 5'er on the L3010.

   / Dump Trailer - Rock Question #13
I've done similar with mine. (Steel bed) With the right tilt, you can pull it in fairly easily with a rake, or push it in from the bed with a rake.

Extra points for putting down a tarp where some inevitable spillage happens.
I did this with mine for both wood chips and small crushed stone and to my surprise it worked and was easier than I thought. It's my go to method for situations like this.

Dumping on a tarp is awkward and you never get it all up because the tarp is in the way and doesn't lay flat. Dumping into your tractor bucket can be messy if the trailer is wider than the bucket.

   / Dump Trailer - Rock Question #14
I've never used a dump trailer, but I do own a small dump truck, and I have gravel and top soil delivered to my place almost every year. Where to have it dumped is always something that I put a lot of thought into.

For topsoil, I've been having them dump it where I keep my round bales, and not an area that I consider nice grass. One day I hope to make it all gravel there, so I'm not too concerned what happens to the grass that gets covered by 8 yards of top soil.

For gravel, I have them dump on my driveway, where it's not in the way of our cars. My thinking is that what I don't pick up, will just add to what's already there. I would never want to dump gravel on any grass that I want to keep mowed.

I've never thought about dumping it into my bucket. I can't imagine how much longer that would take, or how much more effort would be involved. In my opinion, getting it done is my main priority, and not dealing with rock mixed into the grass is just going to create more work for me.

I've seen where contractors will lay down plywood, but I've never seen anybody use a tarp. Even with plywood, there is damage to the lawn that has to be dealt with. When it's dumped on the driveway, there isn't any clean up.
