... I decided to build one....

The problem I see is today's price of steel. I built a 40'x40' pole barn a couple of years ago with all the steel totaling to $1200. Just a couple of months ago, I bought material to build a 4'x16'steel gate, using 2"x3" tubing for the frame and 5"x5"for the post, all 20' long which costed $450....UNBELIEVEABLE!

great job Nat !!

But I didn't see any kind of safety stantion to hold the bed up while working on the ram. I always get the creeps when i step under my dumper even with the stantion...

Nat,

Somehow I missed this thread until just now, but I sure did enjoy catching up!!! Once again, you did a first class job. I've really enjoyed reading what you did and why you did it. The "why" is always the most important part of any project!!!!!!

Thanks,
Eddie

Nat,

How did you shorten the mobile home axles? I have a homebuilt trailer with mobile home axles and my neighbor just bought a pre-fab home that came on two 10x60 mobile home frames. They took the house off the frames and set it on a basement with a 100ton crane. Each frame had 8 axles under it. He gave me a new brake axle to go under my trailer to replace my brake axle, but it is 2 feet too long. I've been contemplating how to shorten it, but havent' come up with a good way yet. One person sujjested cutting the correct amount out of the middle of the axle and then buying pipe that would slide over the axle to piece it back together and welding. How did you do this?

I cut the center out of mine and beveled the ends and welded it up.

I repaired one years back were some one slid a pipe in the axels and gobbed on some weld and welds broke from axle flexing on the pipe it wasn't a tight fit. I cut all the old junk out just in side spring hangers and welded new pipe (same diameter as axels) between axle stubs.

a good weld job shoulden't need any renforcement.

Firefighter9208,
Tommu56 is right. Cut out of the middle. I built my own back in 98 and cut out of the middle, sleeved a pipe inside and rewelded it all up. Ground my welds down smooth and repainted the whole thing. It's still on the road today. If you look close, mobile home axles are arched and the arched part must be up when installed. The arch plays a part in supporting the weight. I suppose the sleeved pipe could be on the outside of the axle too.

I have a utility trailer professionaly made with a single MH axle. For mine, it was narrowed by cutting out a section in the middle and then slipping each end into a single short piece (6") of pipe of slightly larger inner diamter and welding it up on both sides. It is now decades old and still works fine with those huge bearings.

Finding good tires for it has been a problem. You need to scrounge used ones from the MH places.

Thanks guys,

Guess I'll get out the chop saw and head to the metal shop to get a piece of pipe. I had a local tire store order me new 14.5 x 8 tires for the trailer that are not marked "for MH use only". You can get them, I can't remember the price, but they weren't real expensive. I think the weight capacity is something like 3800# @ 100psi. I've had 14,000# of gravel on the trailer, time for new brakes.

14.5x7 or 8 tires are available through various places on the internet. When I built mine years ago I had a good source for used tires in like new condition so never had to pay much. Trailer tires of any size cost more because they have different construction than car tires. Usually different tire compound and stiffer sidewalls.

Finally my 5x10x2' dump trailer it is almost finished. I still need to make tailgate for it. The dump is acomplished by two 24" stroke 2.5 dia cylinders, powered by 2015 machindra hyd. In many ways the trailer the same as Nat's. Thanks NAT for sharing.

Test drove it yesterday, here some pictures.
