Dump trailers

I'm thinking about a dump trailer for work and around the house. I really am leaning towards a deck over because of the drop down sides. Basically comparing 4 brands. PJ, brimar, cam superline, and Appalachian. The Appalachian is 8' wide and the others 7'. The others have metal drop down sides while the Appalachian has no sides but stake pockets and retainers at front and back to put wood sides on. I like that setup most but after talking to Appalachian I don't think the quality is there on the trailer. Cam superline is the best price with pj and brimar being about 400-800 more than the cam. Anyone out there have any thoughts on any of these trailers. I'm looking at 14' long 14k GVWR. Thanks, Nick.

My uncle has a bumper pull low boy BriMar and its been a good trailer. 14', 14,000# with barn door/dump rear gate and pull out ramps. It does weigh a bit, 4,200# empty so 9,800# or 5 tons or so is the max load.

It tows good. I have pulled 5+ tons of coal 200 plus miles at 70 to 75 mph with no issues behind my 06 F-350 4x4 Diesel.

Only complaint is the powder coat. It chips then rust under and comes off in sheets. I would want a painted trailer that can easily be touched up with a rattle can of black spray paint.

I have a BriMar and it is an excellent trailer. It is only a 5000# 5 x 8 but works great for me. The hydraulic tank had a vent on one side so if the trailer was parked at an angle it vented oil. I redid the vent and now it is fine. I would expect a similar vent on all other brands. The power coat paint is my only real complaint. It is peeling and rusting badly.

No hawke dealer near me. Their website stinks. I'm going with dealers I can get to, with the exception of the Appalachian.

I have a Brimar 99 model...painted. It has been repainted once. It is the 10,000 GVW 10 foot model with low profile and a landscape tailgate. We got lots of good use with no complaints. It is for sale and I want to upgrade to a 14-16 foot 8 foot wide so my JD 333D fits in the bed, I am looking at PJ trailers in the 14 K range.

Another endorsement for Bri-Mar. I've got a 5 X 10 7000# dump. It has done everything I've asked it well, and dumped everything I've put in it with no problem. I had some questions I emailed them after the purchase, and they got right back to me with my answers.

Forgot to mention. Brimar won't do a 14' deck over, only a 12'. And try have the highest price so far

I have had a pronovost dump trailer for the last 30 years and it's held up very well. I just put new oak side boards on it and built a headboard and firewood tailgate for it. This spring I freshened the paint. This is the first time I have had to touch it in all that time and frankly it really didn't need the re-paint.The company was out of Canada back when I bought this from my local JD dealer. I think they have a website.

It's hard to tell what is near you since you don't have your location listed. I agree that their website could use some work, but I'd rather concentrate on the quality of the trailer, as opposed to a flashy website.

I am currently on my second dumping trailer which is a Moritz 7'x14' 14,000 lb (www.moritzint.com) and they are located in Ohio with dealers in USA and Canadian locations.

I am located in Canada about an hour north of Toronto and my first dumper was a JDJ manufactured up here. I got a lot of work out of it but our winter climate and salt took their toll on it. The JDJ was manufactured completely with hollow tubing which not only corroded from the outside but also from the inside. I would avoid any trailer which is manufactured completely out of closed box tubing for this reason as after six years there was a lot of rot in my JDJ. The entire box of the Moritz is constructed with C-channel steel so their are no hidden spots for corrosion to begin. I also take the Moritz in with my truck when I get my annual rust proofing sprayed on and do the trailer too.

The other problem with the JDJ was the suspension wearing out. I do a lot of small excavation jobs in the summer months and haul a lot of heavy loads to and from my job sites. This really isn't a JDJ problem but any trailer that has springs and shackles for suspension is going to wear out. In my case, it became an annual spring event to replace bolts, shackles and sometimes even do some welding on suspension components to replace worn out items. It was a few hundred dollars more to upgrade to the TorFlex axles on my Moritz and in two years I have not had to touch the suspension.

I looked at the photos of the Hawke and I notice that the cord and controller for their dump trailer appear to be in a little open holder on the front of the trailer. This is definitely not something I would want in our climate with the salt spray in the winter time. I prefer a larger front toolbox that contains the battery, dump hydraulics and controls that keeps them out of the weather.

The only problem I have had with the 7'x14' is making sure I don't overload it and do not put too much heavy material in the front as that makes it harder to dump. I once had to remove a couple of buckets of material from the front when I overloaded mine but now I count the number of buckets I put in to ensure I do not exceed capacity. My B26 fits in the 7'x14' nicely but I still have the hoe hanging over the tongue and the back doors won't close tight but I just bungee them together.

I have a 2002 6x10 10,000 lb deckover BriMar. No problems dumping with a good battery. I purchased it in early 2009 from the original owner, they had replaced the deck sheet metal shortly before I purchased it. The original owner was a remodeling contractor and it probably sat with stuff in it on job sites etc.

I have a PJ 14 ft X83 inches, Goose neck, I had a problem with poor welds in the D ring at the base of the cylinder, It was rebuilt and PJ paid the full bill.
I would buy anouther if I ever needed one, I have hauled a lot of rock with it, I did weld the center seam for the deck plates, I can haul 3 cords of cut fire wood with 1 ft sides. I just replaced the battery, after 4 years.
I use it to haul my loader, and custom orders now, mostly, besides getting wood.

One thing I forgot to mention is that I line the inside of my dumpers with 2x6 and 2x8 pressure treated lumber. It adds a little bit of weight but it protects the steel from getting all dented. I have found that once the steel sides and bottom start to get dented the paint cracks and start to rust faster. I grease the trailer decking prior to installing the wood to at least slow down rusting that may occur under the wood.

I'm another brimar owner 6' x 10' deck over, 10,000lb capacity Tows excellent. Love the trailer. One of the best purchases I have made. I have hauled tons and tons with it.

I spent the day at a fully stocked and very knowledgeable PJ trailer Dealer in Rice Lake today...Pete Trailer Sales. Mark went over the trailers with us. All of the dump trailers we looked at were powdercoated. I was quite impressed and we will be picking one up this spring. We replaced our 24 ft gooseneck with a 32 ft PJ today with the hydaulic dovetail today. Picture is of Mark the salesman with Angela my wife.

We had real bad luck with a Cam 7x12 dump in our construction business. It's 5-6 years old now, half the paint is gone, all the tires have gone bad, sides and bed mostly rotted out, jack worn out, batteries, etc. The barn door hinges failed, safety chains hooks failed.
These trailers don't lead a pretty life, I know. It helps not to leave them around with stuff in them, but that's what construction requires. We always line the floor with poly in freezing weather to avoid chipping out the debris.
I heard Cam was bought out, and the newer ones have better paint, but I'd not repeat an earlier pain like this.
