Dump truck vs dump trailer

Here you can make the dump truck "farm use only" and forego the licensing and typical insurance costs. You should ensure it is covered under whatever insurance you have on your farm before the occasional venture out to public roads.

Well lets see...You have to license both, so what is your annual license cost. It cost me more to put tags on a truck than a trailer. Then.....you have to put Insurance on that Truck....How much would you drive the Dump truck? Or would it sit, till needed like a trailer....

The OP hasn't been here since November and the last post in the thread was May of 2013.

And that is relevant to the topic how? Discussion is good for all, not just the OP.

Wow, sorry to see that my long dormant thread has caused a stir.
Since it has come back to life, I'll post a quick update.

First off the truck turned out to be a bust, I went to that auction to find out the truck hadn't run in several years and in fact, didn't even have an engine under the hood.
No matter how cheap, that was too much of a project.

So I suffered a couple more years with my old setup until last year.
I saw a sale bill for a local acreage auction, and there was a 6x10 dump trailer listed.

Part of the reason I had been cringing about the cost of a dump trailer was due to the fact that I had always looked toward a 14 foot trailer with the large capacity.
After some consideration, I decided that this 6 x 10 might be alright for the following reasons.
1- The 6x10 is still at 10,500# GVWR, more than my 1/2 ton pickup can pull anyhow. What good is a 14,000# unit if my truck can't pull it??
2- 6x10 was still considerably larger than my existing trailer
3- Smaller trailer would be easier to store inside my building.
4- 6x10 is considerably cheaper than a 7x14.

I did some research and found that these trailers run about $4,200-5,000 new.
With that in mind, I went to the auction to have a look. Although the trailer was a few years old, it appeared to be lightly used and was in very good condition.
The tires were in good condition, it had a fresh battery on the hoist, and the owner had added plywood side extenders.
Its worth noting that this auction also had an 18' car trailer that looked brand new, and a small enclosed trailer that was in near new condition as well. This guy obviously didn't abuse his stuff.

I ended up getting the trailer for $3,000 and I have found it to be perhaps the best money I've ever spent.
With unloading time cut down to virtually nothing, I have hauled out as many as 7 loads of tree limbs in a day.
Before, I was lucky to get 4 and was exhausted from the manual unloading.

Awesome find.

3k for a 10k trailer sounds like a good deal to me. I went through the same decision making process and ended up with a 7x14 trailer. For my occasional use the trailer works out to be cheaper long term. Occasionally I wish I had the bed height of a truck so I could dump in piles better but overall my trailer is great. If I was using it every day and getting paid for it I might go for a truck but otherwise the trailer wins hands down
