dyed kerosene or diesel?

For as little as I will use I will probably end up doing just that. I did not know you could use everyday "taxed" diesel. I did find a place to buy the off-road. It was $1.039 per gal and he still charged me sales tax for 10 gals. (not fed road tax, just local sales tax) I figured I only saved $3 versus "taxed" diesel.

Actuall, the more I think about it I may have lost money. I spent 1/2 day finding a place that had off-road. I drove 25 miles to get some and used about an hour of my time.
I could have drove 1.5 miles back to exxon and bought on-road for $1.45 gal and be done.

There are some nice sized bucks down here. My friend shot a nice 8 point off my front porch last season. We walked out the door and I was chaining the dog up, he said "Look there's one" so I said "Shoot it". We had it cut up ready for the freezer before 11:00 am.

I agree, that if you don't use that much fuel, just get the local road diesel. I'm lucky in that I have a gas station about 2 miles away that sells farm diesel. I buy it in a 55 gallon drum and have used that much in a 3 month period.

So is it ok to use stove oil (kerosene) as a fuel for diesel. I called a tractor dealer to ask and they told me NO. Is there a addative you can use in it. I just had my tank filled. Its dyed kerosene. And would love to use it in my tractor as its full and winter is about over. Thanks Larry

No - Don't use straight kerosene. You CAN mix it with diesel to cut it a little for anti gelling purposes but straight kerosene does not have enough sulfur which adds lubricity for your injectors. One tank probably wouldn't hurt things but I'd add some 1 or 2 diesel to it, at least a 50% mix to be on the safe side.
I also pump right out of my fuel oil tank for convenience, not the minimal cost savings. In the winter I just add a little anti gel, powerstroke or similar product. Over the road diesel is fine, just cost a little more.

My fuel for my furnace is kerosene. Its just dyed is all. My tank is outside and im in the north country. I deal with agway for heat fuel and thats what i use per them. I havent run it in my tractor. Is there a addative i can put in it so i can use it in my tractor? Larry

What kind of furnace do you have...? Are you sure it only burns kerosene? How much do you pay a gallon for a fuel drop?

Kerosene is considerably higher in cost than #2 Fuel Oil... {and less BTU's.../w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif}

My fuel is called #1 kerosene/dyed. My tank is outside. so thats what you get here in the north to avoid gelling. I pay 127.00 gallon fixed rate regardless of price change. They offer a lock in rate and im still in the green for this year. If i dont use 500 gallons they give me back 5% on useage for the season. I used only 275 gallons this year. I know whats in my tank. I was just wondering if it would burn in my tractor.

Boy, now after reading this thread, I am totally confused.

I also hate paying that road tax for diesel, so I went to a local Heating Fuel supplier, and they said that they sell off-road diesel, but only for delivery, and each delivery has a minimum of 100 gallons. Well, I don't have a 100-gallon tank -- just three 5-gallon cans. The lady said that I could run to the local gas station and buy K-1 Kerosene. She said it could be burned in diesel engines.

If this is true, it sure would nice to buy $1.09 K-1 Kerosene, rather than the $1.39 diesel at my local station. I am using about 45 gallons a month between my tractor and skid steer loader.

There is a tax form that allows you to get back what
you pay in on road fuel tax if the diesel was burned
off road. I don't know what the id is for the tax form
but it shows up in my tax preperation software each year.
