DYI fume extractor ideas

Shop vac is high suction, low flow. Duct fan is the opposite. That is what you need for this application. Too much draw could adversely affect the shielding of the puddle, but it is more likely that you just aren't getting much effect from the vac given the low flow and distance to weld.

Why not adapt a range hood from the box stores? This would give you two speed fan and lighting to boot!

Thanks Big Barn for finding what I was envisioning! Only difference i would do is to make the sides of hood extend a bit more or flare outward to help capture the smoke. The grease filter would help with the sparks, just not sure about the bulb covers.

I was thinking the same thing about the usefulness of the grease filters as spark arrestors. Probably would be nice to upgrade the CFM of the fan to match industrial fume extractor numbers.

Dstig1, thanks for the info, I'm gonna research that a little more about suction vs flow.

The range hood seems like a real good idea, but wouldn't work for me coz of my low ceiling.

KC, that looks like a good deal on a powerful fan.

I'm thinking I could do ok with 200 cfm since it's a small space with a short run for the duct. Here's the one I ordered: VIVOSUN 6 inch Inline Duct Fan 24 CFM, HVAC Exhaust Intake Fan, Low Noise & Extra Long 5.5' Grounded Power Cord - - Amazon.com

Cheaper than a 6" duct fan from Home Depot, and the fan blades are metal.

That 8in fan looks to be a great building block for fume extractor.
