Shop vac is high suction, low flow. Duct fan is the opposite. That is what you need for this application. Too much draw could adversely affect the shielding of the puddle, but it is more likely that you just aren't getting much effect from the vac given the low flow and distance to weld.

Why not adapt a range hood from the box stores? This would give you two speed fan and lighting to boot!

Thanks Big Barn for finding what I was envisioning! Only difference i would do is to make the sides of hood extend a bit more or flare outward to help capture the smoke. The grease filter would help with the sparks, just not sure about the bulb covers.

I was thinking the same thing about the usefulness of the grease filters as spark arrestors. Probably would be nice to upgrade the CFM of the fan to match industrial fume extractor numbers.

Dstig1, thanks for the info, I'm gonna research that a little more about suction vs flow.

The range hood seems like a real good idea, but wouldn't work for me coz of my low ceiling.

KC, that looks like a good deal on a powerful fan.

I'm thinking I could do ok with 200 cfm since it's a small space with a short run for the duct. Here's the one I ordered: VIVOSUN 6 inch Inline Duct Fan 24 CFM, HVAC Exhaust Intake Fan, Low Noise & Extra Long 5.5' Grounded Power Cord - - Amazon.com

Cheaper than a 6" duct fan from Home Depot, and the fan blades are metal.

Note: I don't know why TBN always redirects my amazon links to an ebay address. I got it on Amazon, $20.
If you arent paying for the product, you are the product. TBN just like all social media is "free" which means add supported. I'm sure TBN is profiting by redirecting store links in addition to ads.

I'm not happy with it, but it's the cost of free. It's a fair bit of time & expense to run websites or forums. I'm sure Muhammed wants to be able to feed his family running his forums that we all enjoy.

Yeh that's fine, but the ebay link is $10 more than what I paid on amazon, so...public service announcement: buy this on amazon.

It is still weird to me on how the link gets redirected automatically. :confused3:

Yeiks...i just looked at the paperwork on my exhaust fan.... 5,850 CFM. THAT might suck you out of your shop.

What kind of exhaust fan is that? It seems about at least 10 times a 'normal' exhaust fan CFM.

I salvaged the mondo squirrel cage fan out of my attic air handler when I had my central HVAC replaced, with the intention of making a fume extractor. I haven't used it yet so I can't say how well it works, but I imagine it moves at least 400cfm.

But before I got that, my plan was to use an electric leaf blower. I did that before for some purpose I can't remember, but it worked well, whatever it was. I think it was... maybe, the dust evacuation for my DIY sandblasting cabinet? IDK but I made some sort of shroud/flange to couple a pipe to the intake of the leaf blower, and then powered it from harbor freight's "router speed controller" (very handy, get one, I put that ship on everything) for variable speed/suction.

The leaf blower was a $30 job from home depot. Coincidentally, I just found that HF has a leaf blower for $39 with, wait for it... suction mode! Eureka! 375CFM, 230MPH, should evacuate a small weld envelope lickety split. Coupled with the router speed control you should be able to dial it in so that it doesnt pump all your heated air to the outside.

The only drawback I remember is that it's loud. Really loud. Like nearly as loud as ... a leaf blower. But dang effective. It's a bit quieter with pipes on both intake and outlet, and with it turned down by the speed control, but still loud. That's what left me with the desire to find something else and I saved the squirrel cage. But if your budget is $200 I think this gets you there with bucks to spare.

Note: that router speed control works for brushed ("universal") motors. Routers, leaf blowers, shop vacs, blenders, (some) washer/dryer motors, (some) cheap compressor motors, corded drills, corded angle grinders, corded circular saws, etc. Will NOT work for induction motors like that duct fan, my squirrel cage fan, any decent compressor, etc.

I think the key is to try to design a large diameter duct/fan that moves the volume but not at too high of velocity. Seems 6in is minimum and 8in would be a premium for a home shop for a dedicated fume extractor. Again, wanting volume extraction without sucking the shielding gas and at a low dB level. At least this is my thinking.
