I have never understood folks who want to "ride it out". There is nothing you can do to stop any destruction, so take a short vacation south or anywhere that is not in the path of the hurricane. It will only be a 3-4 day trip and you can come back loaded with fuel and food to fix up your property. Board it up and leave early, dont wait till last minute then try to get out with the rest of the fools who stayed till the hurricane winds started blowing.
Also keep your vehicle fuel tank filled with enough gas to get you at least 150 miles before needing gas. I read all the time about many folks who needed fuel to leave and all the gas stations were sold out. Hurricanes give at least 4-7 days warning, so why set around with an empty fuel tank waiting to see if it goes where predicted. It isn't like the gas is going to go bad in your car. I have 3 vehicles and at least 2 of them are always full of gas, plus most times I have 10 gallons of mower gas available and I don't live in a flood zone or hurricane path.
