East Coast: Hurricane Florence

I have never understood folks who want to "ride it out". There is nothing you can do to stop any destruction, so take a short vacation south or anywhere that is not in the path of the hurricane. It will only be a 3-4 day trip and you can come back loaded with fuel and food to fix up your property. Board it up and leave early, dont wait till last minute then try to get out with the rest of the fools who stayed till the hurricane winds started blowing.

Also keep your vehicle fuel tank filled with enough gas to get you at least 150 miles before needing gas. I read all the time about many folks who needed fuel to leave and all the gas stations were sold out. Hurricanes give at least 4-7 days warning, so why set around with an empty fuel tank waiting to see if it goes where predicted. It isn't like the gas is going to go bad in your car. I have 3 vehicles and at least 2 of them are always full of gas, plus most times I have 10 gallons of mower gas available and I don't live in a flood zone or hurricane path.

Different strokes for different folks. I was a forum moderator in 2005. One of the members was a woman from New Orleans who decided to "ride it out". Myself and several other members tried to convince her to evacuate Hurricane Katrina. She refused, said not to worry because they had been through several hurricanes before and were prepared. That woman, her husband and dog all drowned! :frown: Hopefully that won't happen to any TBN members.

Only you know your local area best, and the threats your location are historicaly subject too. Make a plan and stick with it...glad to see down to a 2.

Hurricane Florence is falling apart fast, eye wall has collapsed as dry air is getting into the system. Media is afraid to say it... they’ll stick with their revenue generating story, it’s the end of the world.

Something those not evacuating from the evac. zones may not realize is...they can have the gasoline and generators to have power...but if the grid is down (which is likely)...there will be no power to sewage lift stations and pumps etc. and sewers will back up into residencies...This is especially true for anyone remaining on any of the barrier islands...

Glad the doom and gloom media were dead wrong. Cat 1, hope you are all safe, glad you didn’t face a Cat 4. This type of media hestarical only makes it worse. What happens is after you’ve had a few hyped you tend not to listen to the media and do your own thing. Media types standing in water next to down trees is a selatous way to report.

They have overhyped every hurricane as long as i remember, occasionally they get one right...but not this one.

Always better to be safe than sorry...
The potential for harm and death remain...even at a tropical storm intensity...flying debris, downed power lines and tornado activity are typical with cyclone systems...
Preparing for the worst and hoping for the best is just being prudent...for those that are experienced there are few scenarios that are more miserable than sitting around a flooded area with no power (or AC) no phone, no running water, backed up sewers for days in extreme humidity...!

This slow moving system is only going to compound the issues...I pity the poor souls that did not heed evacuation warnings and think they know better than the leadership that is there to protect them.

People whom live in those areas understand it better than reporters in NYC.

That must be why multiple hundred of them who knew better are now waiting to be rescued, puting the First Responders in peril.
