Easy way to share transfer pump?

That is not a bad idea although I would have to replumb the filter to enable it to unscrew like that. can you elaborate on this hose coupling you use? thanks.

I went to tractor supply and bought 3/4 in. bango quick connect fittings from the water pump area. They are black plastic, and are ok with fuel. I just put a male on the pump and a female on the hose ( or filter ) and connect it. These have 2 levers that clamp down tight, and some have a locking pin so they don't come undone easily.

This is the same design I am referring too, but I would caution that while the plastics may "work" I have found none that are "rated" or approved for fuel handling.

Just have to way the risks on what would happen if they fail.

Does your pump pull out the bottom of the pump or out the "back".

If it pulled out the bottom, you could just upsize the camlocks, say to 2", mount them verticle and it would work.

Or, you could put a 2" verticle on your tank (female) then make a 1" drop tube with a 2" male camlock outside of it. The camlock would do the support, while the drop tube would do the pickup.

That is similar to how we do tanks, with a 4" stub, then do a 2" drop through the middle.
This is pretty much what I wanted to do from day one, but I was told it would not work with camlock fittings because the combined weight of the pump and filter was too heavy and too far offset for the camlock to support it in the back of the truck. i take it you disagree? both tanks have two 2" npt top connections and the pump currently threads directly into one of those connections.

Thanks for the info but i'm afraid alan is right. can't be using plastic here even if it would probably work just fine. plus the one thing i'd like to do right and avoid in all this is spilling fuel all over the place. i guess i'm afraid that any sort of quick disconnect on the hose would be begging for trouble.

Let's assume you have this pump

http://transfer.tuthill.com/files/eLibrary/DataSheets/12voltdcrotary.pdf

Then off this pump you have a Goldenrod filter hung in with two close nipples.

That pump has a 1" pickup threaded into the bottom.

For the sake of argument, lets say both tanks pickup depth is identicle, you will need to get fancier if they are not.

If I wanted to do it, I would probably adapt my 2" up to say 4" then put 4" camlocks on it on the thought that the larger diameter Camlocks would hold more weight (a 4" camlock holds a pretty stout amount of load when you think about the hose we drag around on it)

I would also build a strut, support, base, skid, holder or whatever you care to call it, to hold most the weight of the filter / pump / hose assembly, and would let it rest on the top of my tank. I would probably hang it or mount it too the last nipple where the hose attaches (furthest point out)

Not sure if this makes any sense the way I am writing from where you are sitting or not but could probably dry assemble it here and snap a picture if needed. Would have to think a second on the adapter out of the tank, but It would probably be made from a 2" close nipple, a big steel washer and a 4" coupling, welded together.

Look for a PM.

interesting idea alan - going to a larger diameter camlock. i must admit that the idea never crossed my mind and no one at the plumbing supply house offered it up either. i've got to call them later this afternoon on another matter so i'll ask and see what they say. hopefully, get some idea of cost as well. thanks again for your suggestions.

Yep, we talked about that option. makes a lot of sense too since the pump is not needed for fill-ups.
*why haul that pump and hose all over creation when it is only needed back on the farm.

Theo
*Exactly why my pump isn't mounted to the drum.
I can take the drum to get it filled and just leave the pump set right where it is on the shelf.

Even better than that I fill the drum without taking it anywhere.

Anyone know of a fast, easy way to switch an off-road diesel fuel transfer pump back and forth from one tank to another? or do we need to buy a 2nd pump for a 2nd tank? forget the electric that part is easy. i guess i could use a couple 2" npt unions but i'm hoping for something faster and less bulky. no tools if possible. any ideas?

keep transfer pump handle on one tank, pick up second inexpensive 12v pump to move fluid from tank 2 to tank 1 with dispenser pump

$100 and be done with it

Don't expect to be moving diesel from tank to tank. just from tank 1 or tank 2 directly into diesel equipment. while cheap, i'm not sure this is the best approach for what we had in mind.
