Eggs are better then cash

There can be lots of reasons people try the chicken/egg business and get out, but where I used to live out in the country, a neighbor tried chickens and guineas and neither lasted very long at all. We figure it was coyotes that got them. Then if the cost of feed and time spent caring for the chickens exceeds the cost of buying at the store with no work . . . well, I'm surprised that anyone keeps chickens for their own use anymore.

the eggs I sell are free-range, have been handle by only 1-2 people from collection to delivery, and you get them fresh, not 3-4 weeks after production when they arrive at the store. cheers
WOW, 3 to 4 weeks???

The eggs here, come from "local" eggs laying farms, and I bet you they are no more than 2 to 3 DAYS old when the stores put them out, and in many cares, one day!

I just got 8 more chicks. I will cull the herd or it will be done naturally this fall. Good months I can sell enough eggs to cover feed. I mostly have mine to keep the ticks down and I just enjoy having them. I usually keep 6 to 10 and rotate every 3 years. Fox get a few a year or I get a few fox a year. It is nice to supply the family during this hard time. I am in healthcare so no quarentine for me work everyday and nothing else except alot of handwashing

We sell anywhere from 10 to 15 dozen a week at $4 a dozen all year round. Most are sold at shop that sells crystals, rocks, dream catchers and metaphysical stuff like that. I put a fridge in there and people are coming in once a week for a dozen eggs and sometimes something else that catches their eye there. She doesn't charge us anything to do this, but she is very good friends with my wife and when my wife is off work, she'll go hang out there with her and help her sell stuff. It's amazing how busy that place is!!! One person might spend $500 just on different rocks.

We feed mostly chicken scratch, but I can't say exactly how much goes to the chickens and how much goes to the guineas, turkeys, ducks and geese. We also add some egg ration crumbles. Over winter we used a 20 percent protein that's $15 a sack, which lasts two weeks. We go through two sacks of scratch for $7 each. So $86 for feed for the month and $200 a month selling eggs. It's not enough to justify it as income, but we also feed the dogs a dozen eggs a day and we eat 2 dozen a week, and my parents eat another dozen a week, so there is a small savings in not having to buy that many eggs every month that should figure into the math. Then there is the joy of just having them. We enjoy seeing them walk around, scratch, chase bugs, kill snakes and set off the alarm when there is a coyote around. I've shot several from the chickens telling me there was around. I've also missed about as many times as I connected!!!

What I find interesting is how nice it feels to know that we'll never go hungry as long as we have chickens!!!

And so importantly......How is Oscar ????

He lost some weight over the summer and wasn't putting it back on when the temps cooled off, so we're feeding him twice a day now and that seems to be working. He will be ten years old in August, so we're a little nervous about his health. But overall, he seems happy!!!
