My 20 mile 110 volt fence charger around the garden has gone out its an old sears model thats lasted for 25 years so rather then try to fix it again I'm looking to replace it with one from TSC does anybody have any reccomendations or a favorite that has lasted well and does a good job of burning the weeds off. The livestock hasn't realized it yet but I need to fix it quick before they decide to go eat at Steve's Buffet.

Scott, if its the red one that claims good weed burning abilities thats kinda the way I'm leaning the low impedence technology sounds interesting in some of their more expensive models but I had to ask you folks because sometimes TSC has some really bad stuff. I've made numerous friends at TSC and many of them have told me straight out not to buy any of their gasoline engine products because they spend a lot of time trying to get them fixed or sending them back to the manufacturer for replacement.

Do your self a favor and get a solar one .Ive had mine for 9 yrs still lots of zap and the battery is never dead and if the power goes out you still have juice in the fence.

good point vetteman, its mainly to keep the horses and jackasses out and unlike the dogs they don't hang around the house and garden enough to figure out that if there is no ticking its safe to go thru the fence. If I get another electric one its a matter of plugging it in where the old one is and connecting the ground and charge line where a solar one I'd have to run the solar charge wire all the way to the front of the house to get direct sunlight, there is a huge oak tree that overhangs and covers the entire back of the house where the garden is at. Its good to know the solar ones last that long though since I have several places where a solar or battery operated one would be the only way to do it since they are a mile away from the house and electric.

Yeah Steve, By the looks of one of my hayfields this spring, seems that things got ripped up pretty good with some unwanted snow mobile traffic this winter /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

When I got to TSC last night they had two of the 50 mile low impedence from last year still marked at $99.99 instead of the new $126+ that was advertised it was only $20 more then the 20 mile one so I took one home and wired it in. Oh baby I didn't give it the touch test but arcing across a screwdriver from the tpost it arcs at 3/8 of an inch with a resounding whap. The mules won't be happy, I don't care how thick their skin is.

Was that the solar 50 mile for that price?

Ken, No way the 50 mile solar was quite a bit more like another $80 bucks or so I think. The one I got is the low impedence 110 voltAC better then 2 joule charger for heavy wet and tall weeds the low inpedence is cool if it works like its supposed to it emits a comperable charge whether grounded by weeds or not the heavier or wetter the weeds the more it outputs so it doesn't drop off like a solid state charger does. I'm sure theres probably a limit for how much it can increase before it drops off or it seems like there must be a maximum output before you have to get the weedeater out and clean up the fence line.

Can you still get weed burning fencers? I was told they're illegal. Maybe it's only here in Washington State. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

63DH8,
They claim they are weed burning but it doesn't actually catch on fire it just hits them repeatedly with enough juice to dry them out hence no more or very little conductivity. I have also seen where some regions have outlawed them and I'm not sure if this falls in that category or not, I expect so.

I've got 2 of the TSC solar powered, 3 mile chargers, that I use for my pigs. I've had them for 2 years, and they work great. They don't have enough power to burn weeds, but they have enough to zap my very stubborn pigs into respecting the charged tape. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I have an old one I repaired was DOA from a lightning strike and was dumpster diveing for it. was easy fix as they have lighting arresters fuse type thing inside wihch burns out to prevent it from back feeding the AC homes/barn so bad... I'm goig around my 1/8 acre garden with it on 2 rows this year, doing to give the rabbits & deer a good suprize /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

well the 50 mile low impedence lasted one day when we got to the ranch this evening it was dead, no fuses to replace, electric circuit fine at house, charger dead no activity at all. Guess it goes back tomorrow /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I used to have a "weed burning" electric fence. Like you said, it didn't light grass and brush on fire. However, it would arc the branch, leaf, grass and whatever else that fell on the wire until it was clear of whatever touched the wire.

When I bought goats, I wanted a fencer that would keep the blackberry vines from shorting the wire, so I looked for the "weed burning" electric fencer. The people at the farm supply store said they were no longer sold and were against the law. I was wondering if this law was only in Washington State or nationwide.

I expect it must be a state or regional thing because they are for sale here up to 6 or something joules, I was pretty bummed when the one I bought lasted a day but TSC switched it out without a receipt this morning since the receipt is filed at my office in San Antonio. Like I say I've made some good friends at TSC and I'm in there multiple times a week picking up something. I was amazed they couldn't take my tax exempt accout number and find the sale in history easily since it was only the day before. We ended up reseeding the food plots with some soybeans that came in so I haven't managed to check out the fence again and plug in the new one, hopefully the jackasses don't figure it out before tomorrow and have a little snack tonight or my honey will strangle me.

Hello,

I am new to the TBN and I am trying to get information regarding a charger I have which is a Sears Model 436.22029. I want to use it on my fence to keep my horses. It was my late father-in-law's and is fairly new. It seems to pack a punch and was wondering if it can be used with the polytapes fences? I believe the charger has the ability to burn weeds and wondered if it would also burn or melt my tape fence? Anyone familiar with this model? I have no information on the unit or a manual.

i had a little part time business fixing fence chargers for a long time: Fi-Shock makes some reasonably priced units, put out a heck of a spark, but don't stand up to lightning very well, seemed like a distant thunder would knock them out: ParMac is a good brand, heavy duty an well designed: there are some really high priced units out there, but i couldn't tell they were any better than PM or some of the others: the high priced ones would not sell parts and to repair, they had to be sent back to the company..i tested a bunch of solar units: put a fence around my hay an went from one solar unit to another and never found one that would keep the cows out: but i did this before the low impedance models came out.
