Keep us posted Doc. It's always nice to hear when one of these old girls lives again.

Since you say it didn't run for a while, I wonder if you tried to clean/sand the electrical terminals on the battery and the starter. It might be preventing full battery potential to reach the starter... It happened to me once, and after cleaning the contacts, the starter turned much better with the same battery.

keep in mind every time you drain that huge 4dlt battery down via starter.. you are really really roasting that starter... if it don't start pretty quick.. i'd hold off till I could pull it off.

Thanks for the replies and the cautions. I have been giving it cool down periods between short starter runs since the solenoid hang up episode. You offer wise advice. If one short run with the starter and my truck battery jumping to it doesn't get it lit off I will wait for reinforcements and pull it.

I was encouraged by the smoke.

Thanks to all and I will keep you posted.

Rings may not be expanding from being stuck dropping compression.
Like Soundguy says, pull it. Let that engine crank a few good cycles before giving her fuel.

I second the stuck rings idea. You may need the tow option to get it turning over fast enough to bring the compression up.

Good Luck.

I ran the starter for a short time last night. It made lots of smoke and hit a couple of times. I dropped the shredder off of it and threw the chain in front of it. I'll get my wifes pickup tonight and hook it up so it'll be ready to go when we are both around. Her truck is an automatic. My truck is a stick. She's a pretty good manny tranny driver, but I don't want to take the chance on her toasting my clutch.

We have a pretty buisy schedule even this weekend, so I don't know when we'll get a chance to drag it. It is so close to starting I feel that it will bust off pretty quickly once we drag it down the road.

Thanks for all the help, and I'll keep you posted.

on a gasser that would be super easy... not so easy on an oil burner..

Yes, I have a good diesel compression kit with all sorts of adapter fittings, but I doubt that I have one for this two bolt flange. Surely someone makes such a thing. I'm not going to check compression until such time that either I can't pull start it or it won't come around after being run to operating temp and a thorough, hot oil drain.
