I agree.. try to get her running first.. once you get her going if she starts fine with the starter.. no need for the comp test.

some machines are just more finicky than others after having a dry pump or setting for a while.

Just a panicky moment!
Instructions to the wife before she gives a pull, speed, ease in to it, hand signs. Too long of story for why!!!!
I would also recommend if you have 2 chains and a junk tire with no rim, to put tire between sets of chains so you have a little cushion when the truck starts pulling.

Thanks for the warning, but my wife and I have done a number of successful tows over the last 36 years. Some at almost highway speed. There will be lots of talk before we do it, however. Also, the tractor can't be hurt and she'll be driving her own truck, so she will be highly motivated.

Thanks again, your warning does not fall on deaf ears.

SHE LIVES!!!!

I got in this evening, aired up the tires and got the chain tied to my wifes pickup and gave it a tug. I could tell real fast that her 2WD pickup was not going to get it out of the ruts it had been setting in. I hooked up my other tractor and pulled it out of the ruts. My wife came out to walk the house dog and asked her to drive the tractor and pull me. There's nothing like a country girl. She drives a manual transmission tractor like a pro.

I found a gear that turned it over well at slow speed. It smoked like a steam engine for a little bit and then started running on its own. She stopped and I disconnected the chain and she went and put up the other tractor.

I ran it around for about fifteen minutes and it smoothed out beautifully. It blew some black particulate crap out for a few minutes and after awhile was running with virtually no smoke. I was going in a circle and when I was going into the evening Sun I was able to see the slightest trace of smoke out the stack.

I guess the only thing is the disgrace of a Ford tractor having to be pull started by a John Deere. Sure is great to hear the old girl run again.

I'm going to start it and warm it up again and then drain the oil real good. I'll probably pour some diesel fuel through it while the drain plug is out and clean it out real good.

Thanks for all the help and encouragement.

The only thing I would add is to ask if we could see a picture of the old girl now that she's running again?

I'm embarrassed to provide pictures. This old tractor is most definitely function over form. It looks bad, but runs good.

I'll try to get some pictures after I fix it up a little. I've got to get a seat for it and clean it up a little. Needs paint REALLY bad. Sure is nice to hear that old fuel stingy 3 cylinder running though. There's nothing like the smell of Napalm,.. er'... I mean, diesel exhaust in the morning! These old 3 cylinder diesels are a mechanical masterpiece IMHO.
