Engine oil

in regards of going from long term conventional gear oil, then to fully synthetic gear oil, i have had to replace almost all the seals on transmission, transfer case, & rear differential on my high mile 4x truck. i've gone back to conventional gear oil for the vehicle, but always use full synthetic engine oil & have for nearly 300k.
& yes, those seals probably lived out their life anyway,
Probably because of less seal conditioning additives in the synthetic.

generally a good practice, but on your older M9000 diesels, oil prob gets dark sooner than need for 100-200 hr oil change? an analysis would answer the oil color issue.
having said that, i'm surprised that my Tier2 engine oil stays clear for quite a while compared to older diesels i've had.
overall though, you're right, good to change often & pay attn to the oil needs, etc.
Actually, it never darkens much at all. The Rotella T6 5-40 first picks up a light green hue and then gets a tad darker between changes and I suspect the light green color is from the Nano Borate additive I use at a rate of 1 fluid ounce per quart of oil.

The tractors have a lot of hours on them but exhibit no blowby at all. They cold start well and I've never had to add any oil between changes either and I change it every spring no matter how few or how many meter hours have accrued. Oil always looks so good I really hate to have to burn it in my waste oil furnace.

Like Ive said in the past, the Nano Borate additive really works well. Last time I had the valve cover off for an overhead adjustment, there was absolutely no evidence of sludge or varnish (varnish is a real common occurrence when using a multi grade synthetic oil) in either the valve cover on on the upper head surface and the valve springs and rockers were super clean as well. I don't baby them either. They both work hard in the summer heat.

Use it in my Ford diesel pickup truck and my buggy and my wife's Burb as well. It's not cheap but it works especially in the Power Stroke diesel which is what it is meant for according to Archoil. When I replaced the injector harness' on the power stroke at 100K miles, everything under the valve covers was squeaky clean. No sludge, no varnish, nothing. My Powerstroke has little blowby as well and I can observe it because I removed the crankcase vapor recirculation and installed a road draft tube as I see no reason to run any blowby through the turbo in the first place. All that does is carbon up the compressor wheel.

Of course my Powerstroke has zero emissions hardware on it anyway. Straight 5" pipe, Banks quick spool turbo and Banks performance chip. 22 mpg all day, every day.

Always wondered why H2O wouldn't work to drop floating carbon emissions the same way it does pollen.?.? I mean DEF is 2/3's H2O, and 1/3 peepee chemical urea.
It probably does in many vehicles.

For example, distilled water supposedly works fine in '16 and earlier Rams. I tried in my '17, but it didn't like it.

agree with what you say. think our M series models were the top tiers of pre Tier4, astounding drive trains w/o current emission issues/headache of Tier4.

Hmmmm.... I've heard that early DEF diesels could often use real pee, but never knew water would work, or that trucks as modern as 2016 could fool the system. Good to know.

Is it really worth saving less than $10?

Btw rotella is doing there rebate now. Check there website.
I have the two tractors so it a little less than 20 dollars
I don’t know if it’s worth it, that’s why I posed the question

Surprised to hear oil stays clean for as long as stated. Every diesel I've ever owned, or been around turns black after 100 hours or so. I don't notice much blowby from the tube, but there is a bit. Never down more than 1/2 qt between changes though, at 200 hours. Maybe that's a lot?
