Hire someone with a full size backhoe. Move-in charge $100. 1 hour of backhoe time $80. Total cost $180, maybe less.

For those of you who can get an operator to load up his piece of equipment, transport it to your location, unload it and do an hour of work, then load it up and haul it back again and unload it for a transport fee and and just charge an hour for the work, I envy you.

Around here, they all have a minimum fee of 4 hours. If it's just a small job, they might cut you some slack on that, but they are losing money on small jobs when they can be making a lot more money on the all day jobs. Bills have to be paid, so running around and doing little jobs takes money out of their pocket unless they can charge what they would have made working all day, or at least that part of the day.

As for the hourly rate, if you get a small machine, that the owner doesn't have as large a monthy payment on, and can haul it with a smaller truck and trailer, that also has a smaller payment, then you will save money. Of couse, small equipment isn't as strong as the more expensive stuff, and the bigger you go, the more it will cost you.

For the price of having a piece of equpment come in to move it, you can also just buy a brand new chainsaw. For even less, look into renting a chainsaw to cut it up into smaller pieces.

I didn't think this was possible but my neighbor had some large pine root balls in his yard and he had a guy with a stump grinder come in and take care of them. Worked well and the guy was there already to remove some that were in the ground.
The guy running the grinder wasn't sure it would work either but he was willing to try it, no idea if this is safe or the grinder operator was just crazy but might be wirth a try.

There are no big jobs. Everybody is undercutting each other to do the little jobs, and they are actually working at a loss. Well it is time to get ready to watch the next episode of General Hospital.

This root ball is so heavy (lots of clay soil clinging to the underside of it) and massive (easily 30 feet in circumference) it does not even budge a centimeter when I try and yank it with a chain hooked up to my F350 (tires just skid on the asphalt).
I think I can speak for the rest of us. We would sure love to see a picture of this mammoth stump.

I say hook up a giant rope to the stump with about 100 feet of slack. Then hook it up to the hitch of your f350, and have the hitch right next to the stump. Then stomp on the gas and drive off as fast as you can. with all the momentum in that truck going like 20 mph will do one of 4 things.

1.when the truck gets to the end of the rope it will stop dead and you will get whiplash

2. when the truck gets to the end of the rope the hitch will rip off:ashamed:

3.when the truck gets to the end of the rope the stump will move a bit:cool:

4. when the truck gets to the end of the rope the rope will snap:(

NOW WHEN I SAY A GIANT ROPE I DON`T MEAN THE BIGGEST ROPE YOU CAN GET AT HOME DEPOT OR OR RONA, I MEAN THE SORT OF ROPE YOU USE TO TIE UP A BATTLE SHIP (4 INCH PLUS):D

I would like to see the stump too. So we are talking about a 10 foot in diameter stump did I understand that right?

Hi folks.

Few weeks ago I had a guy dig out a bunch of enormous stumps for me with a JD310. all but one enormous tulip poplar he managed to not only dig out, but push/roll/drag off into a ditch in a back hidden area of my 5 acre plot. Our time was up on the machine and I was left with this humongous tulip poplar stump sitting in the front yard. Its up out of the ground just sitting there ruining an otherwise nice view.

I dont want to rent that JD310 again just for one stump - that's $500.

This root ball is so heavy (lots of clay soil clinging to the underside of it) and massive (easily 30 feet in circumference) it does not even budge a centimeter when I try and yank it with a chain hooked up to my F350 (tires just skid on the asphalt).

I have a big STIHL 660 w/ a 32" bar, but I cant cut it up into smaller bits, at least, not without ruining my Bar and chain.

Cant burn it as it is near another tree - not that this wet thing would burn anyway after the accelerant cooked off.

Only other 'tool' I have is a BX25TBL but this thing outweighs it probably 10x over. I'd probably have to cut it into 8 pieces for this tiny thing to be able to help.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Why not chip away what you can with the FEL, use a pressure washer to help it along, and hook up the tractor and your truck at the same time. The ball is 10' diameter? so the trunk would be how big, 3'?

eddie has the right idea.... replacement chainsaw bar and chain is CHEAP compared to renting a JD machine. I did the same with my BX24 and popular stump. I was able to dig most of dig away with BX, cut stump almost in half and used the backhoe to crack it open the rest of the way. I had to sharpen the chain maybe several times when cutting the stump when it got near the dirt area. When I was done, I just threw the chain away since it got too hot and temper to hold sharpness was gone. The bar is still good. Once the stump was in 2 pieces, I was able to flip it over to scrape more clay/dirt off the bottom till it was light enough to move with BX.
