Equipment trailer, 16' vs 18' dilemma

   / Equipment trailer, 16' vs 18' dilemma #31
I just priced a 18' car hauler type, low profile, for a guy at $1700. I think the price is very regional. I can get and sell new trailers cheaper than most used. The trailer has brakes, ramps, and a wood deck. 7,000GVWR Here is a pic of it.
That trailer for $1700, would already be in my driveway, if I could buy one for that in New England. I've seen them used for more $ and new for around $3000. Everything in NE seems to be higher priced.

That is what we sell them for here. We make deals on multiple units. Time to take a road trip and bring home a stack of 4 or 8 if you have a F-350 GM 3500 or a Dodge 3500 diesel. I wanted one with rails so I got a wide version of the common Landscape Trailer. As you can see it is as wide as the 4x4 F-250 its being pulled by. I put a winch on the front and use it to haul cars, suv's, trucks, and my tractor. The biggest thing I hauled was a Suburban 120 or so miles but it has been on longer trips hauling slightly lighter loads. By the way the trailer weighs 1,250# empty so it still has a useful load of 5,750#

My utility trailer guy delivered it to a town about 60 miles from me for under $900. That was in 2004 I believe in June or May. The price has gone up alot since then. Its a 18' trailer with 7,000 GVWR with a spare tire and brakes on one axle. It has removable 5' ramps and the setback tongue jack. Here it is behind my wife's 2004 F-250 4x4 PowerStroke.

By the way I like the low profile trailers for loading over a dove tail. With a dove tail you loose 2-3 foot of deck space that I need for the things I like to haul. The low profile trailers are easy to load with 5' ramps. My dad dabbles in Corvettes and I haul them all the time for him and have never had trouble loading one and they are one of the lowest slung cars out there.

The only down side to a low profile trailer is when you go off into a field or something like that it has a few less inches of ground clearance.

Where do you live? I could put you in contact with some top notch dealers.
Chris
Do you know of any in the greater New England area that deal in that particular trailer for similar $?

Where are you at exactly? I will look though my dealers data base. The problem is the vast majority of trailers are made here in Indiana, Oklahoma, Texas, Kentucky, Southern Missouri, and Southern Illinois. I got mine from a company in Sikeston Missouri and the one I priced for the guy, the trailer in the picture, is made in Southern Kentucky. You would be paying a additional charge to get it to you. That is why they are more expensive around you.

If I were you I would incorporate picking one up on your vacation or something if you want one on the cheap.

Give me all the info you can and what you want and I will look into it for you.

I sell boat and in turn sell trailers. I have only sold 10 or so car hauler type trailers and 2 dumps. Where do you live? I could put you in contact with some top notch dealers. I live in CT, we have some big dealers here, I know they're less expensive but I can't do the low profile car carrier as I have a big hump over the town side walk and an uphill drive that I'm worried any long trailer would scrape, don't want to go as low as 7K.

Loaded as you see I have about 10% of the payload on the truck (estimate only). your trailer is obviously a much better unit but mine was all I could find at the time. Probably not everybody is going to like it but it has been used and is doing the job well so far as I see. You have got set of great ramps on your rig that you are thinking of buying.

Why do you put it backwards? what happens if you put it forwards, to much or not enough tongue weight? My tractor might be a little longer but I think your BH sticks out further than mine does, it gives me a good idea on the fit, thanks for the profile pic.

With that load of lumber you must have been pretty close to capacity!

Walker,
Yes it does look cramped, are you sure that's an 18 footer in those pics? it looks smaller.

Well, now that you mention it, I didn't actually put a tape on it. The rental yard SAID it was an 18-footer.

This is typical new price for 16 foot trailers. 18 foot are only a couple hundred more. Craigslist usually has used ones for 800-1200 listed price in the Texas area.
