Ethanol in Gasoline - Fuel Additives Gasoline - Truth

I mentioned it in the Transportation Forum, but it was really not the right thread to be talking about ethanol.

Ethanol is the substitute for MTBE, a chemical that is used as an oxygenate in gasoline and helps raise the octane level. It was a substitute for lead and sulfur compounds originally. But MTBE is nasty stuff, and a very small amount can ruin groundwater supplies. So you can imagine that it being in gas and in underground storage tanks everywhere, a lot of groundwater has been contaminated. California stopped its use in 2003, the rest of the states soon after. China still uses it.

I'd rather drink fresh water than save 0.1 mpg. Heck, I like the way my truck runs on E85. If I could get it more often, I would use it exclusively in that. I use E10 in my power equipment, and have never had a fuel related issue.

Ethanol is not a government conspiracy, not a liberal agenda and is not going to kick your dog. It might have caused some compatibility issues in the past, but manufactures should have it figured out by now.

There is one and only one place.

Chatsworth SUNOCO 110 Griffin Vehicle Service 609-726-1717 1551 County Rd 532

Like.jpg That's only 116 miles, about 2 hrs each way. BTW, NJ sucks.

MTBE is really bad stuff. It doesn't break down like other chemicals . That gives it the ability to migrate long distances and still cause serious health problems. There was a documentary recently showing how it went from a source in California under a river and ended up completely contaminating the municipal water source . The name Oakland rings a bell but I might be wrong. They ended up having to truck in water for some time until they got it under control. I believe that's where they first discovered those terrible tendencies that led to it's going away.

I have been using E85 in my 2015 2500HD 6.0L for a little while now, since prices have adjusted. Save about 2 cents a mile on fuel costs, even with the lower mpg. The motor has more pep and runs great on it. I used E85 a lot of the time in my 2013 1500 5.3L.

Same thing, I have used E10 in a lot of small motors for years and years with no negative effects.

My small engines never saw a drop of Ethanol gasoline. I needed to use my edger recently and it wouldn't start due to completely gummed up carburetor after sitting all winter with gasoline in the tank. The throttle was frozen, nozzle plugged etc. Once it was cleaned the engine started and run fine. It doesn't matter IMHO if you use E gas or not. Both will gum up carburetor.
