I mentioned it in the Transportation Forum, but it was really not the right thread to be talking about ethanol.
Ethanol is the substitute for MTBE, a chemical that is used as an oxygenate in gasoline and helps raise the octane level. It was a substitute for lead and sulfur compounds originally. But MTBE is nasty stuff, and a very small amount can ruin groundwater supplies. So you can imagine that it being in gas and in underground storage tanks everywhere, a lot of groundwater has been contaminated. California stopped its use in 2003, the rest of the states soon after. China still uses it.
I'd rather drink fresh water than save 0.1 mpg. Heck, I like the way my truck runs on E85. If I could get it more often, I would use it exclusively in that. I use E10 in my power equipment, and have never had a fuel related issue.
Ethanol is not a government conspiracy, not a liberal agenda and is not going to kick your dog. It might have caused some compatibility issues in the past, but manufactures should have it figured out by now.
