Experience refilling argon or 75/25 cylinders yourself?

We got a supervisor in one time who didn't like giving back anything to the gas supplier, so every time we would change our bottles out, he would vent them to the atmosphere.

His email address must have ended with .gov

Good fill plants always completely empty cylinders and purge them even if they are completely full and never used. How can they guarantee their gas is as pure as possible if they don't do this? Actually, this exact procedure was made mandatory when I worked at the largest gas supplier in the world.

Multimatic 200's aren't very big sellers here. People that buy them use them for their own use. They're easy to move around in a workshop. I wouldn't think there's too many people going around with them in a truck trying to get work. They don't have a very high duty cycle and are more a hobbyist type machine. If you want to go to a friends place and weld something fine. If you're relatively new to welding and the customer has to supply the power, how much can you charge? I wouldn't think very much. If you can get decent pay doing jobs like this, more power to you.

I was the one who posted that Co2 is liquid and would be heavier than a mix gas. Another poster conformed it.

I agree. Tanks that are rented and sent away to a fill plant are purged.
But if you have a customer owned tank, that gets filled at a small LWS while you wait, it might not get purged. I know mine arn't. When I changed a C25 to argon, I paid a purge charge.

Sounds like a great machine for someone posting in the weld section of a tractor forum! (Me). The MM200 is an inverter welder, easy to make a pretty weld!

If this isnt a hobbyist weld forum I dont know what is. I've read weld forums and they're almost impossible to get any info, the only advice you get there is that equipment you can't possibly own is required for the job. Meanwhile everybody and their dog are getting the job done and well, with 120v migs to 1940s buzzboxes.

One thing I've learned from forums is that when pros post (in a hobbyist forum) you have to learn to read between the lines. Lots of wisdom can be found but you must pay attention. I see lots of folks being goaded into overbuying. But that makes for good deals on craigslist I guess. For example I submit that nobody who gets their info from the weld part of a tractor forum should read any sentence that contains the words "duty cycle".

Back on topic,,,,

Does Airgas charge less for a refill if you decline the "purge"? For example if you have 25psi of 75/25 it seems safe to simply refill.

 Yeah, I think a few on here forget that many people watching this forum neither need/want/can afford, the latest or the greatest.:D

Yep, you're right. I should have left "want" out of that equation.

A MM 200 is close to $2000. Then if you want to add TIG accessories like a foot pedal etc., you pay even more. Not exactly what you'd buy if you were on a budget. If the fill plant has a policy to purge, I wouldn't think you'd have a choice. Again, how can they guarantee the gas?
