extension cord source

i went to buy an extension cord today, and the local electrical supplier can't get the female cord plugs - only receptacles that require a metal box. i went to the local welding shop and they were out of stock on pre-made cords and will be at least a week plus before they get more. anyone know an online source for them?

i'm looking for something with nema 6-50 ends on it with an 8-3 or 6-3 cord about 20-25 feet long. the local welding supplier said the only ones he can get through his supplier are 25ft 8-3. he sells lincoln and they rate that cord fine for their 255, so it should be fine for my lower duty cycle stuff. i'd take a 6-3 too if i can get one, just in case i ever have the need to run a machine with a bigger cycle.

You can check your local RV stores.It's off season you might find a good deal there.

What about just doing it the old school way, and using an electrical box, and normal outlet? Not recomended, but it has worked just fine on job sites for many years.

The sort of outlet you put in a wall. I have seen tons of old cords from job sites, that just have a household electrical box, and a normal wall outlet. The nice thing about those is you can have up to about 6 outlets on the cord, so sou can keep a lot of tools plugged in at once.

hes looking at a WELDER circuit...50 amps. #6 and #8 cord. Unless im misunderstanding what there talking about.

edit: nope, im correct. A NEMA 6-50 cord end is a 240 volt, 50 amp welder plug

I know what your saying. The examples I used were with 110v 15 amp. I was thinking he could do the same with a NEMA 6-50 outlet, an electrical box, and the #6 cable. If he wanted, he could switch it out to a proper outlet, when he finds one.

the hd & lowes stores around here don't have anything bigger than 10-3 for bulk cord or pre-made. if you happen to go in one near you and this is still on your mind, get me a sku nnumber for it so i can see if they can get them here.

that's what i'm trying to avoid. i can buy a male plug end and cord around here, but the only option for a female plug is a receptacle in a metal box, or a plastic range/dryer style box. neither is what i want. i want a sealed rubber~ish cord end. i don't know how those styles work legally, and at the current time i know it's not an issue for personal use, but if i'm going to spend the money anyways, i'd prefer a real cord.

good idea. i hadn't thought of checking there, though there really isn't anything "local", but i can call around and check.

outlet, yes, i've seen tons of them there. i don't want an outlet, i want a cord end. they don't have that where i am. my shop is wired with a drop for the welders, but i want a little more roll around room for the cart, and since the cart has stick, mig, and tig on it, it's easier to get one extension cord that will do everything rather than get longer leads for all the machines.

i'm sure there are other ones out there too. doubtful it would get here any quicker though, and about the same price the local welding store quoted, assuming they get their order in soon, and it arrives son after that.

I have seen the kind of cord end at home depot. That is what I ment by the outlets, I just couldnt think of the right word.

Its called SO or SOOW cord, and both my lowes and HD here in N idaho carry it.

But i get way better prices from my supply houses.... like 1/2 the cost of the box stores.

thanks for looking. i just checked ebay and they have a 25' ones for $75. i'll see if i can pin down the local shop on when they will be getting their next order. i don't really want anything longer than 25' anyways. i work out of a 24x28 shop, and with where it is wired a 25' extension would allow me to weld something that was 30-35' away from the shop as it is.

as far as local stores go, i checked lowes and they certainly don't stock the female plug here. i can't remember whether i checked home depot recently or not, but this is a state with an entire population of about 1.3 million people, so maybe we don't get the full inventory.

Our local Fleet Farm stores have them in a Hobart brand. Check places that sell Hobart, perhaps. Only time I have seen them. I make stuff like that to fit my needs.
