Sorry to hear about your troubles, but sure am glad to learn that I am not the only person in the world to have disdain for the ease-out tools. Never have had any luck with them, always seems to break and worsen my problem.

I have not looked at any picture, but this sounds like a set screw on a shaft type scenario, which would likely mean the screw is a bit harder than your typical screw or bolt. If these impressions are correct then I would get a bit that will cut the set screw and drill it out completely. Once the parts were disassembled I would then just thread for a size larger set screw and never look back.
