I recently bought an 88D in great condition. I'm having a bit of a problem though. Overall, the unit has been operating excellent considering how wet the lime is from my local quarry. My problem: the left side of the machine keeps binding up / bending the auger engagement bolt. The right side works perfectly. It's like the left side is getting bound up and quits turning? I'm not exactly sure what's going on. Is anyone here familiar with this model and can give me some advice? I could be a total moron and missing something obvious. Also, what does the lever in the middle of the unit control? I'm referring to the level that sticks up in the center of the unit.

The lever in the center of this unit controls the gate openings in the "flow" of the spreader. the Gate should work freely and enable you to adjust the rate of application of your fertilizer or lime, etc. The part is pretty straight forward....IMO.

Not sure what model you have or if you have hubs that can be engaged / disengaged from the feed augers? My unit is always turning those augers (no hub lockouts) but others have these hubs. The turning of those "beaters" (or agitators) is the heartbeat of these machines. Hard to feed wet or dry lime thru this unit if the beaters are not working properly.

Maybe a pic would help.....and identifying if you have some "lock-out" agitator feature??? Pretty straight forward machines.......the agitators (beaters or augers) keep the material loose and flowing through the gates (holes) at the bottom center of the unit.....which is controlled by that lever in the center.

This design is similar to drop spreaders used to apply lime to lawns and such....but on a bigger scale.

Foggy, the lever i am referring to is the one that sticks up in the center of the unit, not the gate opening lever. It is connected to some sort of gear box down in the seed box.

And yes the 88D has the lockout feature. That is what I don稚 get, one side works perfectly but the other side works fine for maybe 10 minutes and then it bends the bolt that is responsible for the engagement. Something is obviously locking up and preventing it from turning the engagement hub.

Hopefully the pics will help.

This is the side of the machine that never seems to fail. And the last 2 pics are of the center lever and gearbox. That lever is seized up. Not sure if that's part of the problem?

My spreader does not have that engage / release setup like yours has.

If you raise the wheels off the ground do they both turn with the same effort?

Yep. Nothing is obviously broken, it's weird.
