Turbo bearings run on an oil film, there is no metal to metal contact like piston rings do.

And last turbo i had measured was an undersized HX30 mounted on a 6BTA to solve turbo lag issues. It oversped on acceleration to 45.000rpm, shortly before stabilising on its design speed of 30.000rpm when the engine was up to speed. Turbine threw blades within 1500hrs

Wow, turbos have been have been around for many years. With great life spans if applied correctly. I have heard of VERY few failures and been around them for years on both diesel and gas engines. Across the pond they have been getting more horsepower and torque out of smaller displacement engines for years with no issues. If you want great mileage in a pickup get the 2.7. It will still tow fine but when you work a smaller engine the will like gas. For most the 2.7 is fine. You want something that will last to 200k with no issues get the 5.0. The last few years have been getting 20+ mpg for us in normal highway service. The older ones 15-18. They tow pretty well also for a smaller displacement engine. We will see how the 2.7's will last. Right now we are running the 5.0 to 225-250k on the original spark plugs! If you plan on towing 8k+ all the time get the 3.4. There have been a few problems with them like timing chains, air charge coolers working too good, [water issue] and throttle bodies. But that seems to be mostly sorted out. Time will tell with all of them but right now I would get the 5.0 or the 3.4 depending on what is out there. CJ

Thanks for all the replies. Being that 6 1/2' box SCrew is what I want, the 3.5 EB is my number 1 choice.

Gonna guess you mean 3.5. That's a good engine, and what I will get unless I get a Super Duty (then it's diesel, baby!)

Ford sure has a good line up of engines right now. They just need a mileage diesel and they'd have all the bases covered.
