You do as I do. I pay myself $400 per month per vehicle into a "CAR" account. That's $5000 a year per vehicle. That plus my trade or selling my trade always puts me in a position to buy with cash.

You must of learned from Dave Ramsey.

Nope. I bought my first 15 or so vehicles the other way. I got ahead on a few and just keep saving my money then in 2008 I was able to buy my 1st one cash. It was a fully loaded $45,000 truck. Since then I have bought 3 more this way.

Guess I just got smart.

I do similar. Sometimes I finance for a few months if that gives me a better deal at time of purchase, then pay it off before the interest undoes the benefit. I don't like vehicle payments.

I took out financing on my last truck just to get an additional rebate. Paid it off after the 60 day minimum period. I have a separate savings account for vehicle purchases and don't buy until I have the cash. I buy a brand new vehicle every 5 years.

Exactly what I did with the latest. Big big difference in the salesmans attitude after I told him that.

I disagree. If you want to work down from MSRP then go for it. If you think the dealer looses money by selling at the published invoice cost then you don't know the business. I was responding to a post where the gentleman was quoted a price OVER invoice and pointed out that it wasn't a good deal.

Do you believe I was suckered for paying $750 under invoice and kept $6500 in rebates? Did you notice I said that I ordered my truck and didn't buy dealer stock?

There is a big difference between window sticker MSRP and dealer invoice. No dealer wants to sell at their invoice unless the MFG. gives them incentives and holdbacks. X plan is I believe $400 over dealer cost. My last new truck was purchased with this plan.

Invoice is not what the dealers pay. A car dealer here even said that at the end of their radio commercial. The dealers get back end money. I'm not sure exactly how it works. I think they have incentives to sell different vehicles like sell X amount of trucks you will get X amount from the manufacturer. The larger dealers usually have better prices because they can sell more and get more back end money. I had a guy that worked at a dealership explain to me about the back end money a little one time. Most people will not discuss it. I think they take an oath that they will not talk about back end money before they can become a salesman;) I had a dealer tell me if he got a truck off another lot he would loose his back end money and the price would be higher than trucks on his lot.

Update...we are "apart" on the final numbers. Looking at other options now. Thanks again for the helpful tips and what has worked for you guys. It helps to not jump on something that could get better.

If the numbers aren't right they just aren't right. Dealers will begin wanting to deal here very soon, they seem to go into hibernation in January and Fedruary and half of March for whatever reason.

I think most large dealers list the vehicle below invoice. I know a guy that can get some kind of special pricing on GM's. His daughter was going to buy a Cruze. They went to the local dealer and his special pricing was more than what they sold for normally.

Yeah we have the X plan and the last guy that went bought new ford said if I was ever going to get a new truck don't even mention it waste time,go with all the other discounts they are offering to get the better deal
