falling on ice

I went out to get the mail last Saturday. About four inches of snow on top of a solid sheet of smooth ice from my front door, a thousand feet to the concession road. The snow kept me from falling. ALMOST did twice. I wonder, will the snow eventualy bond with the ice?

I keep bags of play sand around, actually in 5 gallon buckets with covers. Does not take much to put a good coat of grit on top of the ice in the areas I walk between my house and barn. Get it on sale in the fall. [ before the ' falls ' ]

It depends on the temperature. That much snow works well as a buffer anyways, but an inch or snow on ice in cold weather can be just like walking on ball bearings. My tractor has been parked on the edge of my walkway to use for a handrail. Next summer changes will be made, so that water doesn't flow across the driveway during a winter rainstorm.

Pretty hairy walking around until I got the sand going . Ice makes for a hard landing ! Managed to stay on my feet though :thumbsup:

I use the ice spikes that attach to your shoes with rubber straps. Same as the mail carriers use.

For slippery winter conditions, Ice trekkers is all we'll use. The bottom are non-intrusive enough, we can still cross cleared walks wityout notes them, yet the star shaped teeth still grip. We've used them to climb over rock slopes in the winter. These things rock for ice grip and we've never worn the teeth out.

The slickest part of any outing is my porch and the four steps down to ground level. I've slipped numerous time but always been able to catch myself prior to falling. I keep a plastic bucket of sand on the porch. A couple handfuls and it's better.

Once on the ground - I walk from snow patch to snow patch. Sometime it's a bit longer walk to the car or tractor but a whole lot more secure. Never have had total ice cover over everything.

This time of winter is the worst. Melts in the late afternoon - freezes up at night.

We got 4-5 inches yesterday and last night, just finished th driveway.
Tried out the studded boot traction aid, they worked.
Hard to get on my boots, got the XXL but the toe box was still to small to fit well on my boots,
then the stretching and fitting to get the heel strap on,
I have to put them on my boots before I put the boots on,
which is kind of a pain.

we will have to see how long they hold up, had to replace one stud already,
no wonder they come with 10 spares.
