I wouold drain the gas tank and the glass fuel bow under the tank to start with and put fresh gas in to start.

sounds like fuel system problem to me. likely water and/or dirt in lines or float. dirt will settle out then when you run it ,stirs it up until it blocks the carb orifice. other thing to ck is on the glass sediment bowl make sure the petcock is open, may ahve been turned off.
clean and blow out everything and put in fresh fuel with a good carb cleaner additive to remove gum and varnish.

starting then dieing generally means lack of fuel thru the fuel valve or float needle seat.

assuming points are not burned.

Hi all. New user here but have spent a long time "lurking". I read this post and I think I may have some info to fix it. My father in law has an older Alice chalmers about the same size and vintage. He had a similar problem. It would start and then instantly die. As if all four cylinders would fire once only then die. After four hours of trying to diagnose it, he gave up and called a local equipment repair facility. They spent a lot? of time working on it and finally figured it out. Apparently there is a spring in the distributor that was broken. From what I gathered from my father in law, the spring kept pressure on a gear that keeps the motor in time? I would try taking the distributor apart to make sure nothing is broken/rusted. Some of the earlirer posts have already suggested looking at the points, which is very good advice. Especally on a tractor that has been sitting. It's not that much harder to keep taking the distributor apart to see what else is going on. Sorry if I stepped on any toes and sorry to be long winded. I'm going to head over to the new member introductions tomorrow to formally introduce myself. Good luck!!

that would be the very last thing I would think of when it starts fine and stalls.. IMHO

Yes it's a good idea to keep you from scratching your head all day I wouldn't have thought to check that but it runs for about ten seconds then stops it sounds like the timing is on so hopefully it just a fule system issue

It probably wouldn't even start if timing was off.. so I'd save that wild goose chase for another day..

Yeah I would half to agree with you do u think it is a good idea to add a inline fule
Filter

generally the inline filters cause more problems than they solve, as there should already be a sediment bowl there. if you have chronic bad gas or tank problems you can't address.. then you could add a fuel filter made for a gravity feed lawnmower.. etc. IMHO, it's not prefered.. but sometimes you do what you have to do..

Guss I should have asked for more info first. Runs for 10 seconds and dies is different than starts and dies right away as stated originally. I would agree that some new fuel and clean/replace filters should do the trick. Best of luck!

Close off the fuel at the bowl under the gas tank..then take the fuel line loose at the carb...these are metal lines (from the factory)..at the fuel line connection at the carb you will find a brass "strainer"..see if its clogged..if so you have found the culprit..also look in the tank with a good flashlight and see how much "rust" is in there around the walls etc. Once you do that come back and tell us what you find...BobG in VA

Ditto.

Also, give a couple of good whacks to the outside of the carburator. Good chance you have a sticky float after sitting for so long.

Hello Crw. My first guess would be fuel. BUT, did you check for a spark after it dies??? If you don't have spark when you let the key go, Not while turning it over, but when you let the key go. To test, use a jumper wire from the battery to the coil. If it keeps runing you have an electrical problem, from the key to the coil.

That is the direction I was headed with my first post, losing spark. After talking with my father in law again about what happened, the broken spring was some sort of a automatic timing advance/****** to assist when cranking the motor by hand. Not motor timing as I mistakenly first said. Once the motor fired it was suspossed to return to normal timing. His tractor didn't sit for a couple years, it ran fine then 3 hours after being parked it would start then imeadeatly die. I think the problem is fuel related after learning that it runs for 10 seconds then dies. Im anxious to hear what it is. Good luck!

I have a Cub Lo Boy that the sediment bowl cork gasket was deteriorated in. The little pieces of cork would clog the outlet and cut off the flow of fuel. You couldn't see anything and the bowl was clear so was a bit frustrating:mad:
