Feds to require CDL for farm tractors

/ Feds to require CDL for farm tractors #51
Sorry for posting in the wrong place. I started this thread this morning in the Rural Living section on this subject. It is an article that is in the last issue of Texas Farm Bureau's publication. As I read it, no one can drive any motorized farm equipment on a farm without a CDL. This includes kids in a farm family until they turn 18. This would ruin family farms that depend on the kids helping get the crop to market. You can see the article here.....New regulations could threaten farm transportation - TractorByNet.com

hugs, Brandi
I believe the question was cleared up earlier in this thread.

This is another example of congress trying to sneak another law on the books. For what ever reason. Most of these stupid laws are tacked on to another bill that needs to be acted on. Congress then bickers back and forth on the main law with little reguard for the attachments. They slip thru because everyone was concerned about the main bill. Simple fix: No more attachments, one bill one subject, plain language. An public accountability for how a congressman votes on every issue.

Maybe you should add, One subject one vote, since half the votes they take are designed to create political talking ammunition against the other side.

I've given this some thought since the OP posted.....and it occurs to me there comes a time to take a stand and I can say this for sure...IF the govt. passes and enforces this rule or law...I will openly and notoriously violate it...Civil disobedience...if they wan to call it that..they can call it a Felony if they want to but I am going to continue to drive my tractor the same 5 miles on two lonely country roads that I have been doing for years. It will just have to be Dixieland where I take my stand.....but I can only suffer Fools and Foolish laws so long...This all has to stop ! and it will be up to each of us , in our own way to resist, for if we don't then we must submit to the boot on our neck..

News from the American Farm Bureau Federation:

The Transportation Department's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration announced today that it has no intention of proposing new regulations governing the transport of agricultural products.

The agency also released guidance designed to make sure state officials clearly understand exemptions that allow farmers, their employees and their families to accomplish day-to-day work and transport their products to market.

After hearing from concerned farmers earlier this year, FMCSA initiated this review to make sure states don't go overboard in enforcing regulations on agricultural operators, and to ensure consistent access to exemptions for farmers. No regulations will be proposed for any new safety requirements or changes to the rules governing the transport of agricultural products, farm machinery or farm supplies to or from a farm.

This guidance-which does not impose any new rules on farmers-follows the Federal Register public notice which FMCSA issued on May 31, asking farmers, farm organizations and the public to give input on the agency's longstanding safety rules.

The American Farm Bureau Federation submitted comments to FMCSA, noting that the guidance on agriculture and interstate commerce was based on inaccurate assumptions about agriculture. AFBF urged the agency to rescind its current guidance and replace it with one that accurately reflected the agricultural market chain. This includes treating farmers engaged in crop-share lease agreements the same as those transporting only their own crops.

Give me an AMEN brother!!

I got to agree, if they want to check me on my tractor on my property they are going to take fire.

I agree, ridiculous! But to play devil's advocate, I wonder if your opinion would change if some some neighbor kid on dad's tractor ran over your wife, kid or grandkid. A very rare event like that is what usually gets these laws started. And that forces us to say, "OK, even though super bad things happen once in a blue moon, that is life & we just don't need this law." Like the helmet law :)

I remember an old saw about there being three types of people in the world... Sheep, Sheepdogs and Wolves.
The Sheep allow themselves to be led around by the nose by the Sheepdogs... And the Wolves just do whatever they want!

I guess we all need to figure out where we fit...

What on earth does preparing for and getting a CDL have to do with operating a combine or tractor on a public highway? The proposed regs said NOTHING about requiring training for the equipment in question, just stuffing OTR truck regulations down farmer's and farm worker's throats.
