I'm planning to buy a Jinma 284 and would like some feeback from anyone that has built a FEL from plans. Are they worth it? Or do suggest purchasing a unit designed for the particular unit? Cost is always a factor that is why I'm requesting opinions and feedback. Thanks, Harry /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Built a CadPlans 1XXX, can't remember their model # anymore, and building this way has its pluses and minuses. If you know how to weld or want to learn to weld it's a great project. If you know how to do some machining then it's a great project. If you don't know how to do the machining get a kit. Building the mounts is the most important part of the project. Done wrong you can damage the tractor, but this is not likely. Also done poorly your FEL may never be straight. The rest of the project falls into place after this is done. Hydraulic cylinders and valves are also important. if you get a kit then also get the hydraulics with it. Saving $ here is not easy, and fitting other cylinders can be a pain.

If you finish you will be VERY familiar with how your FEL works. knowing something about welding, hydraulics, and machining are not bad things at all. Bottom line: If you have the tools and knowledge it is a fairly easy project. If you want an excuse to get the tools, (welder, drill press, grinder, etc.) then it is a good start up project. You won't save $ if you don't have the welder, drill press, etc, but it is an excellent reason to get these things.

Use my FEL all the time. Have used the tools that were required to build FEL many times over. Would do it again.

I cannot say it any better than blackd has. His comments were right on the money. I just finished mine and am now getting ready to paint it. It was allot of work but it is very strong works great. I would do it again also.
I deviated from the plans when it came to the hydraulics. I bought the cylinders and valve from Metkit but did not buy their hose kit. I used stainless lines to route the hydraulics close to each cylinder and then had short hoses made at a local shop to connect to each cylinder. This will cost more but it looks better and gives it a more professional look than having large hoses routed all over.

Built a CadPlans Loader for my small Yanmar. It was an excellent experience, took a couple of months. I bought the Hydraulic kit and acquired the steel locally. If you are not in a hurry, I highly recommend building one. The Plans, in my opinion, are worth it, as is the hydraulic kit. I was able to get the steel VERY cheap from the scap bin at work, making the project extra cost effective.

I agree with the previous posters, it is a lot of work and requires some talent and attention to detail, but the pride of saying "I built it" makes it worth it! Photo attached.

Well Harry, I bought a BX2200 and later decided I wanted an FEL. I surfed the Web, checked out Metkit as well as looked at numerous FEL's. Ultimately, I decided to build a FEL from scratch. I wanted an FEL with built-in linkage that keeps the bucket level (or at the same angle) while raising or lowering the bucket. I spent a little time fabing up the arms and linkage using scrap wood....made numerous linkage pieces and tried numerous hinge or pivot points until I hit upon a design that worked.

Check out the link for some pictures of the FEL as well as some of my other projects.

As has been said before....Building is Fun and rewarding. So, if you have the desire and the abilities.....get after it.

Good Luck! DW

I also Envy the work and abilities Danny Williams can do. You must have some nice metal fab equipment to do that kind of work!

Thanks guys /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif, for all the input. Very nice projects Danny, I'm kind of a fabricator myself. I was just trying to get some info on which direction to go. I have all the equipment and ability to make the unit from plans but have to keep wifey happy as she is always making comments(nagging) "what are you making now?" I think I'll build one from plans anyway /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif just to give her something else to #%$&@ about. ..Isn't life wonderful? "Don't sweat the little things " life is too short.
