Yes, we are complicating the simple, though some folks seem to be benefiting from the discussion.
I'm the one who mentioned the bucket three feet off the ground, I didn't really mean to go out of your way and lift the loader just to drop it again. It's just that in normal operation the bucket is going to be off the ground when you engage float, like when your moving snow, at the end of the push you lift and dump your bucket, as your backing up you level the bucket again and hit float just before changing direction for another pass that way your bucket is on the ground and your ready to go, it's all one fluid motion with no stopping.
I don't have alot of experience with FEL's but have been plowing snow with truck mounted plows for 25 years and those blades are just floating, So it seems to me no mater how you use a tractor for snow, whether it's a FEL, a front blade or a back blade you need to use float.
