Fence Chargers

Just out of curiosity, what would be the best way to charge a fence that's 1000 feet from power? Would it be practical to run a line that far?

How many acres about do you need fenced in with power ? Are you tryin to keep livestock in or keep critters out ? What kind of climate is it where you live ?
IMO I would get a battery powered fence unit with as many joules as you can afford for this project if your in a mostly sunny climate . Another factor in the equation is if you go with a battery powered unit , a battery tender charger, a deep cycle battery , and a small solar panel , you don't want to have this set up in a place where you can't see from time to time or some thieves can target you from the back side and steal your set up .

I don't have a pig in there race but the Buy the Cyclops STALLION 12V Battery Electric Fence Charger Energizer – CYCLOPS ELECTRIC FENCE CHARGERS is a good place to start .

You could also run a battery powered unit and charge battery now and then with a 1000' cord line and battery charger .

Or go the underground route like Peter 315 posted . If you dont have one , can't borrow one might be a good excuse to add a quality premium shearbolt protected sub soiler to arsenal of implements . Just some thoughts on your question .

I can vouch for these. I own one and accidentally touched it yesterday. Trust me, It's something I never want to do again. It didn't shock me, It hurt to the bone !!! I was almost knocked out by the shock !

I have three dead Parmak SE5 They were great until they weren't. Have a Gallagher M300 that has been working for 5 or so years.

I would like to keep deer and turkeys out of my garden... too late for my new plum tree, the deer already had a feast on it. Also foxes and raccoons out of my poultry, so that I can let them free range during the day. As stated previously I have a 3 joule Parmak which has kept my pigs in for 4 years, running it off a deep cycle battery; I"m just not sure how well it would actually work if I tried to fence the entire 2 acres.

To be honest for the price of a bigger battery powered unit I would be better off running a line up from the house... although since it will be through the woods I won't be able to bury it, and won't have time to cut a swath up through the woods until next year.

Jury still out . I been running one of these lightning diverters on leased land I have like 40 minutes from the house that belongs to a freind . I havent had my fence energizer smoked yet . Fla well known for lightning . Might be just coincedence . Could be just phychological insurance on snake oil . However I would suggest some of you's out there hook one up and let us know if your system got smoked with one on.

I would if at all possible avoid buying fence chargers from the big box stores . IMO they are generic , cheap built units . I don't think they still sell them but even Harbor Fright :laughing: sold fence chargers .
While we are on the subject might be wise to check your local laws incase powered fences require being posted as so ?

I've been using PremierOne solar chargers for about 5 years with no problems. It also has a 120v option. several options for different applications. Not the most inexpensive, but in my experience fairly reliable.

rScotty, MORE information needed. Mains , solar or battery?
Proximity to house? Theft can be a problem especially solar units. (drug growers) Mains, is shed lockable? Battery , out of sight of the road.
LENGTH of fence. Note each powered wire must be counted, ie 5 wire fence with 3 live wires @ 100 yards long x 4 sides = 1200 powered yards. It does not take long to clock up a mile of fence
If you have not got a "short" tester, get one. Also if you have a long enough fence get the "remote switch off" option for conveniance when hunting and fixing shorts. It saves a lot of time.

Special Note: MOST electric fence failures are due to poor earth/ground. READ and FOLLOW the earth/ground instructions.

I use a Gallagher M2800 (approx 7 years) on my farm, replaced a 17 year gallagher unit that lightning killed.
Farm was leased out.
