Well everyone, thanks for the suggestions and comments. I hate that the topic might have caused heated discussions. but as someone else said, differing opinions and experiences is what makes this forum so darn great.
AS FAR AS EXISTING FENCE:
There is 4 strand barb wire existing. I am planning on removing it, as it would not hold barbados anyway. And predator control is a concern. 8 acres (including this 4) of our place is fenced in Barb wire as noted above. The rest has no fencing. My neighbor to the East side has installed 10' poles (look like cut off telephone poles) all along the 2200' property line on about 250' centers. I figure I can attach smooth wire, along with a strand of electrified fence to those posts (with T-posts in between) when the time comes to fence it.
But back to the project at hand:

I am going to remove the existing fence, and clean the tree line. I guess I will put up a smooth electrified wire at the top instead of the barb wire !! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Purpose of animals:
Barbados - Sell well horned rams to hunting ranches, sell young lambs for mutton, PASTURE MOWERS, POISON IVY EATERS, CEDAR EATERS !!

Donkeys - protect other animals from predators, eat some grass, reproduce and sell babies for profit.

Horse(s) - Pleasure right now.. daughter (age 7) will ride some, but barrels and team roping will come soon enough.
I have every intention of buying a new roping horse in the next year. So I would like to put up a fence now that will be good for the future as well. This 4 acres is just to get animals contained. The fencing the other 26 acres will be a constant work in progress.
Thanks,
Daniel

I just recently replaced 4 acres of woven wire fencing. After looking at all the options I went with HTP from centaur, it was cheaper than field fence and still uses t-post it is also one of the safest and can be electrified. It comes in 1320' rolls and is $125 per roll. Comes in white ,black, or brown and has a 20 yr warranty. It is high tensile wire with a polomer coating that will not cut a horse if it has a run in with the fence. Pm me if you woul like more info.

Also consider the legal aspect. In Alabama it is in law what a legal fence is. If your livestock gets out of a non-legal fence you are responsible for all damage.

I wouldn't use solely a barb wire fence for horses.. however a good 2x4 woven wire.. or 2x4 V- no climb wire with a single top 'hot' strand, or a barb strand won't cause many problems to the average horse. ( Ya do vaccinate them don't you? ) If I had 250,000$ horses.. I guess I'd stay away from barbed wire.. etc.

If I had a $ 250,000.00 horse I think I'd SELL him. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You aren't just whisteling dixie..

when I originally fenced some of our pasture back in 2000.. I fenced in 3ac perimeter, and then did some cross fencing .. that was all 3 board cresote, good round 5-7 posts.. and 2x4 woven redtop wire.. Did some of the interior fencing.. like a round pen out of just 3 board.. etc. Added a hot wire. Cost came to about 15,000$ /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Do Not Use Barb Wire for any horse containment or fencing, it is tragic.....just ask any equine veterinarian about it...... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Also ask a vet how many thousands of horses are in a barbed wire fence now and have no trouble, as stated before any horse that will run into a fence can get hurt no matter what type.

Ask a vet what kind of fence they recommend.

as stated before any horse that will run into a fence can get hurt no matter what type.
The issue isn't whether or not the horse will get hurt. The issue is the severity of the injuries. The injuries sustained from running into a barbed wire fence will be much worse than almost any other type of fence.

I won't argue your point that barbed wire isn't the safest possible fence out there. However It seems a bit insulting the way some people speak so boldly about it. There are lots of farms that use it for cattle and horses and it does the job fine. Anyway thats my opinion, you could ask a vet about many things and get a horror story about it !
