Fence removal

About 4 years ago I bought a old property that was formerly a hog operation and have removed most of the old fencing. Do yourself a favor and buy a small bolt cutter. It will cut the wires with little to no effort. Wear Gloves and pull and cut.
The fencing pliers shown will work, but at great time and effort. The are the multi-tool or leatherman of fencing. It performs many tasks, some of them very well, but cutting wire is not one of them.
From the looks of your picture, part of the fence was piled and the tree grew through it. Wire will be in and around the tree and roots. You will not get it all out with hurting the tree. Keep a bucket or garbage can close by to throw the small pieces of wire in. They seem to attract tires.

We 4 wheel on my farm in the timber. Over the years much junk has been thrown in the ditches. In my attempts to clean up some of it I've come across a lot of old stuff like bicycles, push mowers, stoves, bed springs, etc. I've hung several in the forks of trees to create what you posted. Just not sure I'll live long enough to benefit from the surprise on peoples faces.

200 feet of "hog" or net wire doesn't sound like much. What am I missing? Cut into manageable sections and pull with a tractor. Not to brag but I have removed a lot more that 200" in just a little while. Again, what am I missing?

No one can steal the bike that way. It is cheaper than buying a bike lock.

Again, what am I missing?

I am missing where the boardwalk in the last picture is going. At first I thought it was a pallet and I thought it was an extension of the pallet thread. But it appears to be a boardwalk and it heads to the tree with the hog wire on it. So I guess I answered my question.

That "boardwalk" is a footbridge across a creek right next to a small waterfall. I want to keep the tree since it provides shade in this wonderfully picturesque spot. And I have to get the dang fence out of there so folks aren't tripping over it or stepping on it and getting tetanus.

Nice. And it looks like you have some firewood too? Given the creek and the lay of your land and the wood, getting that fence wire out may be a little more than you bargained for, but it can be done.

Thanks for all the suggestions. This tree is at the bottom of a ravine, which precludes taking the tractor to it.

I got most of the fence removed. I used the come along and the fence pliers to cut it. Took a total of approx 3 hours. Once I got the section that was wrapped around the tree removed I found out the rest of the fence was laid out flat and buried about 6 inches. It just kept coming and coming. Next step is take my metal detector down there and find the pieces that are left.

I am somewhat perplexed by this. The tree had grown around the fence in a dozen places. I thought that the loggers had wrapped it around the tree about 8 months ago, but it looks like it's been there for years. So now I have to find out what they did with the fence that they removed. This whole section (maybe 20 acres) is pretty rough and I have not been over every square foot yet. Maybe another surprise in store.

Tom Seller --- Loggers left all the tops of many large walnut trees, so I've got tons and tons of firewood. I've cut a lot of it in place, just need to get it up and out of there. Have a winch on my wish list.

I thought that looked like walnut laying on the ground. Glad you got the fence out. I've done a lot of fencing with that type of fence plyers, not the easiest to cut with, but for what you had, it got the job done.

Fencing pliers are always in the toolbox. Actually a very innovative tool that can be used for a lot of things besides fencing. Never leave home without em.

The spanner lumber looks to be a 2x4 or 2x6 neither of which provide much strength in the position that they are laying. Laying on edge would be better, but I think I would have used a a treated 4x4 fence post for the spanning lumber.

Look closely, I think he has them on top of logs

Scrap it. I cleaned up some of our old hog pens this fall and it didn't take long before I had a ton of it on the trailer. our price at the time was 180.00 a ton

Yep, two 12" logs set on abutments the same size and notched,skinned and leveled somewhat with a draw knife.

2x4 treated lumber lagged into those, decking nailed into the 2x4's.
