another thing here- the neighbor that is securing all the permissions has even offered to pay for diesel now!!!

Check your insurance.

I know I am covered for theft under my homeowner's policy as long as the tractor is on my own property. I am covered for liability anywhere so long as I am not getting paid for the work.

I don't know if accepting fuel is O.K. or not, never had the issue come up. My suggestion is don't take anything at all until after the job is done and you have your rig back on your own land. If you should happen to tally up the hours & fuel you use and your neighbor wants to give you a gift in appreciation I think it would be O.K., but I am not a lawyer and I am not your insurance company.

If I understand this correctly, there is a hole in the ground that holds water and you are going to fill the hole so the owner can plant grass on it?

Since you are not building anything on it, and no matter what you've read, you won't be able to compact it worth a darn anyway, don't even worry about trying. Just dump the dirt and get another load. Work as fast as possible to get it over with.

Before you start, be sure the water is out of the hole. Adding dirt to a hole with water in it just creates quicksand. Depending on the type of soil and the depth of the mud, you should be find with dumping the dirt on the mud, but you really don't want any water in there if you can help it.

In a few months, that dirt will self compact after a few rains. You may get some settling then, or not. It really depends on the type of soil. Spending time trying to compact it really won't accomplish anything in this situation.

Ideally, try to leave a small mound that diverts water away from where you've filled the soil. It will take some time for the grass to get established, and the rain water run off will cause erosion, or wash away the seed if it's allowed to go across the fill area.

Don't over think this, an don't turn it into a government job. It's a hole that will grow grass. Fill it in and do so with the fewest amount of trips possible. Get dirt, dump dirt, get dirt, dump dirt and so on....

It's really just that simple.

And if you are lucky you will be able to push some of those piles over the edge instead of carrying them to the ramp at the far end. If not, then build up/fill the hole in front of the piles until you can get at them from IN the hole to backdrag the fill to the center of the hole.
Once you get a smooth system in operation you should be done in no time.

I wanted to update this..
As it turns out, the property owner has decided she's not gonna let anyone do anything unless it is done with her contractor.

Ther neighbor has turned this whole thing over to code enforcement since it is an open pit.

Code enforcement had said in the past the hole must be filled. Funny thing is one of the neighbor's was willing to pay for the work, but did not want to use her contractor. That is where things broke down..

While I am not sure, I seem to think that CE, will use a per day fine. and the only gotcha I see for the property owner is the date of the fine start. Since the hole has been there over 2 years, and there was at least one complaint dating back almost that whole time, they could backdate it...

It will be interesting to say the least.....

I'll update the thread when I hear back from the neighbors...

Later,
J

We are not doing anything to help her now..
Talked with the neighbor, and she will just have to do it herself..

let the county deal with her..
From what I hear, she just might be in real trouble since it is an open pit....

Some people you try to be nice to, and they just can't accept it....

Glad to hear you are walking away from this. It's one thing to help a person out, but it's another when they don't appreciate it and another when they go legal. Sorry to hear it went that way, but at least you are not involved in it.
