Kubota says oil every 100hrs and new filter every 200hrs. Why?

I guess the only reason that Kubota states this in their tractor manual is that they want you to wear out your engine faster so that you can buy another new Kubota tractor. There is probably some people here on the board that will give you a real reason why Kubota states in their tractor manual to change oil filters on ever other oil change, but this don't make sense to me. Think for just a second. Why filter new oil through a dirty oil filter. On my tractors, cars, and truck, I always intall a new oil filter on ever oil change that I do myself.

There is one thing else that I almost forgot. Why not change oil every other time, and install a new oil filter every time for you 100 hours service on your Kubota tractor, and add oil to the crankcase to the full mark on the dipstick each time. I would drather do this than filter new oil through a dirty oil filter. Although, I wouldn't do this either to my tractors, cars, and truck. As I stated before, I AWAYS install a new oil filter on ever oil change.

You're joking, right?

My guess is, Kubota knows that the additives in the oil begin to be depleted at 100 hours so the oil needs changed. However, the filter, which removes particulates from the oil, still has plenty of filtering capability left in it.

If you want the real reason, send an email to Kubota. You might not agree with what they tell you, but at least you'll know what their reasoning is.

Mike, I suspect that given the sq inches of filtering area in the oil filter with an idea of the maximum amount of worn metal and other contaminents likely to be trapped in 200 hours of operation, Kubota (as well as many other manufactuers) know there is just no way your going to compromise the flow of oil. I think the idea of putting new oil in a engine with an old oil filter is more of a physcological issue then a detrimental issue. Perhaps why I also change it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

PS - I would also think as the filter gets dirtier, it actually would tend to filter even more aggresively as the spaces that allow the oil to pass through get smaller.

We change the engine oil filter and the engine oil on all our Kubotas at the same time, every 100 hours.

We do, however, change out the hydraulic filters every 200 hours and then change out the hydraulic fluid @ 400 hours.

The life of your oil filter depends upon how much dust is sucked through your engine's air filter. There is no absolute answer to that, as some people work their machines in dusty environments and others do not, and some dust if finer than other. Finer dust makes its way onto the motor more than coarse dust.

If you are concerned I suggest you fill your rig with a known oil, run it a set period, and send the oil for analysis. Most oil companies offer this service. For example, you could fill with Mobil Delvac and then use their Accu-Trak analysis service.

That would give an answer as to change interval for both oil and filter based upon your actual operating conditions.

Yes! I was joking in the first sentence of my post to Sparkkky.
One thing that I wasn't joking about is that I install a new oil filter on my tractors, cars, and truck on every oil change. If some people don't want to install a new oil filter on every oil change, that is their business. I think it would be better for the engine to change oil filters on every oil change. That is just my opinion, some here on the board might not agree with my opinion.

There is probably not an issue with the filter being able to last 200 hours.

The only drawback I can see is that you will be mixing the old, acidic oil that remains in the filter with your new oil. So you won't be starting out with an entirely new crankcase of fresh oil. No more than it costs to throw a filter on, I just go ahead and do it. Motorcycles are the same way. I change my oil annually in them because I don't usually ride any of them more than 2K per year. There is no way the filter has reached the end of its useful life, but I change it anyway just to get rid of the old oil that it contains.

I have no idea but that's what I do, by the book. It seems as if I'm in a minority here. I can understand the reasoning behind leaving dirty oil in the filter when you change the oil but probably the filtering capacity of the filter hasn't been diminished in the 100 hour interval and the amout of oil in it can't be that great.

I've never really thought about it but now you've got me at it. Is it a good thing or a bad thing?????? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif Do I want to keep on doing it as per the manual or do I want to change the filter with the oil????? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

If you consistently work in dusty conditions, or did for the previous 100 hrs, change the filter.

If you didn't, you do not need to, but change it if it makes you feel better. (I'm not being sarcastic. Feeling better about it has its benefits)

The only way to know for sure is to have your oil tested.

Too many people on TBN spend way too much time thinking about oil. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif Me, I have better things to do with my time than getting my oil tested (this may not apply to a commercial/farming application) and pondering whether to change my filter or not. So, every 100 hours I change both the oil and the filter. If I don't put 100 hours on the tractor before winter, I change the oil and the filter. Again, since I do not put that many hours on the tractor (last time I used the tractor was on March 5th), it doesn't make a big deal financially. Even if I doubled my usage, it wouldn't be a big deal.
