Filter everyother oil change?

( Changing the oil and not the filter is like taking a shower and putting on dirty under wear. When you price engines verses an oil filter seems like cheap insurance )

My feelings exactly. I'm surprised Kubota engineers would make such a recomendation. They normally err on the side of saftey, so to suggest leaving an oil filter on for 200 hours appears just the opposite. Has anyone asked Kubota directly about this?

How about changing the filter and not the oil? I have heard that with synthetic oil you are supposed to change the filter at the normal interval and change the oil and filter at the next interval.

you could also do that, but you need to make sure you use a good filter.

If a filter is not changed you still have 1/2 qt plus of dirty oil to mingle with new oil. If you like your equipment to last as long as humanly possible I would change the filter every time and also use diesel fuel conditioner/lubricant. Especially if your locale uses lo sulfur diesel like Seattle area.
Manufacturers vary on their opinions, but if it makes it thru warranty, that is their only true obligation.
If you trade up every few years you may never notice a detremental effect of leaving the filters alone.
I know some auto manufacturers claim you can go 7500 miles on an oil change. At our auto shop, when we tear into these vehicles you should see the sludge! I believe some manufacturers want you to think their vehicle needs the least amount of maintenance outlay as a selling point.

If you follow the book for oil drains, you will be fine. You are not hurting anything. If you were, Kubota would not post it in their book/manual. My gsxr-1100w states the same thing (filter everyother year).

I am (and have gone over) going 12K drains on my Lexus. I am going doing extended drains in my suzuki gsxr and my wifes car; and did it in my old powerchoke truck. Again, oil tests show it's 100% fine and no sludge. If you use a good oil, you can go 7,500 and more.

Actually, it's more like 10K now. Both my daughters' cars have 10K oil change intervals; my truck can go 15K under light duty. The oil in my diesel truck has right at 7500 on it right now and isn't even dark.

Follow the manufacturer's recomendations and you'll be fine. If anything, the intervals they specify are conservative.

in theory, would emptying the oil filter of the old oil and filling the filter with kerosene and draining b4 reuse be beneficial? could refill with frsh oil 4 example!?

**Warning** offensive content to follow.

After working daily with ASE Master Techs, ASE heavy engine specialty techs, and automotive engineers, and seeing the results of poor quality oil and over used oil, me thinks that oil and filters are cheaper than engines. If you can't afford to change the oil and filter with quality oil and a quality filter, you can't afford a tractor. Go back to using a mule and plow. Even then, the mule won't eat some of the cheapest garbage put in his pail. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The actual answer to "why" on the manuals?! Ask the EPA. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Do you have any ideal how much a used oil filter contaminates, let alone used oil?! No joking, no kidding, no BS; that is one of the contributing factors.
