I crushed and mangled a filter using a chain wrench once.
I ended up using a chisel on the base plate. Once it moved a little bit, it spun off easily.

Somewhere in this thread there must be a story of someone that damaged the block or oil filter outlet or threads with a simian-tightened filter.
