...I would run the hoses on the out side. If you have any leaks they will be easy to find.

That's a good point. I'm glad you brought it up. I realized that I'm looking for reasons to run the lines on the outside since it will be easier to build that way. I had been thinking that the right thing to do is to run them inside to protect the hoses.

Now that you brought up a reason to run them on the outside, I'm sold.

Much easier to change if needed also.

I need to post a follow up to the issue with the wrong drill bit from Enco. The replacement bit arrived yesterday. It was the right size, and I was pleased with how quickly they got it to me.

The project is going to be on hold for a little while now. We just dug a big hole in the front yard for a walk-out basement and a porch remodel. For the first time in my life, my wife was as excited to see a piece of diesel machinery as I was. :)

I'm running ragged trying to keep up with my full time job and still coordinate all of the subcontractors, permits, inspections, etc. The backhoe is something that can wait, and so it will.

OK, but make sure to take lots of pix and keep us informed.
Oh, and give us a link to watch the progress on the hole.

I have to celebrate the small steps.

I snuck off for an hour tonight and welded up the skeleton of the boom. I'm going weld plates on the side of the boom accross both seams later, so I ground the welds down to allow the side plates to mount flush.

I hate grinding welds; but sometimes it has to be done. Keep the pictures coming as progress is made.

I kept wondering if I could have minimized the grinding if I were a better welder. I chamfered the joint good and deep and I turned my amperage up a click, but I still had protrusion above the surface. That said, I had to grind less that I would have had to do a few years ago when I had started welding.

What welding rod are you using for this project. I followed your original thread on the planning and I will be following this build. It is slowly coming together.

I have saved a bunch of links for tools, parts and material suppliers. That is a plus for me.
