does it have any sort of a performance or tune chip in it?

Not to my knowledge, but now has got me wonderning?

This is my first diesel. How does one know if it has a chip or not?

And FWIW, a guy I work with has a 3/4ton with the 5.9 diesel. He said he got 18-19MPG on the computer AND by hand figuring. Then he put a chip in that is supposed to be like +80HP AND they claimed a 3-5MPG improvement. The chip tricked the computer alright. The computer now says 22-23MPG, but doing it by hand, he was only getting 18-19. So NO improvement in reality, but it fooled the trip computer.

He did say that the power was a noticable difference. Unlike the chips you can put in a gasser that you really cant tell:confused2: He said it was definatally a noticable improvement, but nothing gained or lost on MPG's

I have ran chips in 3 of my diesel trucks. Usually adjustable ones with tunes from +30 to +180 HP and the best I have seen is +1mpg. Its hard to achieve a big improvement with so much beast under the pedal. Biggest improvement I saw for economy was a filter/intake plus a bigger free flowing exhaust system.

i've seen a superchips tuner that did an economy mode that boosted fuel milage and dropped towing ability. if you wanted to tow you had to reprogram to tow-safe or higher.

IMHO.. the fuel numbers were due to computer diddling.. not 100% real world 'improvements'. that's why I asked about the tuner chip. might be computer trickery.. to see higher numbers on the computer, vs what you calculate by miles traveled vs fuel added to tank.

I think thats exactally what the chip is doing it the guy I work with's truck.

But how do I know if mine has a chip? Any good way to tell?

Only way to know for sure is to have the dealer check the flash on the trucks computer.

There are 2 types of "CHIPS". One is a tune that you download to your stock computer. It stays in the computer till reprogrammed with something else, higher tune, factory tune, ect. Biggest issue is they are stuck in that tune and traceable.

The other type, the ones I uses, are a actual box. It has wiring that goes between the trucks oem computer and the factory harness/systems and simply modifies the signals coming from the computer. On mine for example I can switch on the fly from stock, +30, +80, +120, +180 and is non traceable with about 10 minutes of my time removing it from under the hood.

ditto what diamond said.

the superchips tuner I saw actually downloaded a new flash tot he engine computer.. I have seen one listed for my 99 f450 that was similar to DP.. it was an actual unit you added.. etc.

again.. I think many of them use computer trickery to modify fuel numbers vs gallons burnt / miles traveled.
