At one time this morning it was raining in the front yard and sleeting/snowing in the back.

I hate getting out of the house!

I had to get my friend living at Fern Terrace in Mayfield to Paducah early this morning to get his new hearing aids fitted and after getting him back home I went by the shop doing some deep service for our 1976 265 MF and 1980 3600 Ford. On leaving the shop I decided to take a path directly though downtown Mayfield tornado zone to check on family plots in Maplewood Cemetery and the general damage zone. After leaving the cemetery I went towards downtown and without knowing it I was going west on Broadway without knowing it until I came upon the post office which is mainly standing. My mind is still mush.

On a plus side the Ford was ready and after the son got out of class for the day he came out and with the F-150 and trailer we got that tractor home. It is a very different tractor power wise plus it has new brakes that actually work. The injector pump on on each tractor was remanufactured by a company in MO Bootheel. I put it in 7th gear to come up to the house and the power was scary.

The tornado damage blows my mind and there are no buildings remaining of the JD dealership which was near the candle factory where several died. Much of the rubble has been hauled off so there was not much cleanup traffic if one wanted to do a drive through of downtown.

It will forever be a mark in time. Things will be measured before, after. The face of the community has been altered and can't fully recover. Very stressful for all locals.

We've had some smaller tornados that did tremendous damage in a small area. Even with the small area of damage, it's hard to tell where you are sometimes, even decades later. It goes to show you just how much our brain relies on landmarks for navigation.

Anyone every grow up with a 4-way stop sign at the same intersection for decades, then a stop LIGHT is installed, and as you roll up to the green light, you still step on the brake because of the years of familiarity with the stop SIGN?

Tornados are non-discriminatory. Kentucky got thru a gigantic, devastating tornado with minimal loss of life. One is too many, but it could have been much worse.

Few days ago Iowa had several tornados. One went thru a small community about 60 miles from me. CAT 4 tornado. Only on the ground a short time. Killed 6 people including 2 children. 4 of which were in one house.

Yes, I saw that on the news. Terrible. When I see things like that, I tend to make a mental note of all of the emergency prep things we have done and kinda scroll through the list to see if anything needs updating.

And going through a tornado is a hard way to find those things.
